Smoke evacuates Saranac Lake apartment building | Local News

SARANAC LAKE — Firefighters temporarily evacuated tenants of 28 Broadway in the Village of Saranac Lake Monday morning due to smoke in the building.

Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched out at 9:02 a.m., followed by Lake Placid crews at 9:11 a.m., Franklin and Essex county dispatchers said.

A Saranac Lake firefighter said the smoke, which he described as a mist, was coming from a dryer that was about to catch fire but did not.

Residents sat outside while the smoke was investigated, some holding their pets as they sat on the sidewalk.

Tenants were allowed to return after about half an hour, the firefighter estimated, and fire personnel did not need to use any water.

Franklin County Emergency Services Coordinator Ricky Provost also was told the smoke was contained to a dryer.

Saranac Lake's crew was back in service at 9:56 a.m.

The three-story building, located in downtown Saranac Lake, previously housed an Aubuchon Hardware store on its ground floor.
