Man shot and killed in Sun Prairie; person of interest identified, police say | Crime

A 33-year-old man was shot and killed early Sunday morning in what was believed to be a targeted slaying, the Sun Prairie Police Department said.

Around 1:30 a.m., officers headed to the 400 block of South Bird Street for a report of a man being shot in an apartment complex parking lot, according to police.

Sun Prairie police spokesman Jon Lothe said a “specific person of interest” in the homicide has been identified.

It is the first homicide in the city since 2015.

Lothe said several people who were at the scene when the shooting happened have been identified and were being interviewed by police with the help of the Dane County Sheriff’s Office.

He said investigators have received copies of the apartment building’s security camera footage and would be reviewing them.

The Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory also was assisting in the homicide investigation, Lothe said.

Investigators had set up a canopy tent behind one of the buildings, located at 425 S. Bird St., of Rolling Prairie Apartments.

Lothe said the shooting victim, who died at the scene, was found there.

Nikkie Smith, who lives in a building next to the scene, said she had seen the victim around a few times but believes he did not live there.

She said she saw the victim’s body, and it appeared he had been shot in the head.

Smith said she heard nine to 10 gun shots.

Smith, who has lived at Rolling Prairie for 10 years, said children often play outside at the apartments, adding that the place is usually “peaceful.”

“There are tons of children out here. How are we supposed to feel safe?” said another apartment resident, who declined to provide her name.

Police vehicles from Waunakee, Cottage Grove and Madison were also at the scene Sunday. Lothe said Sun Prairie police requested the presence of surrounding police departments to help secure the scene of the shooting so Sun Prairie officers not assigned to the homicide could continue patrolling the rest of the city.
