Lexington man accused of killing, dismembering ex-girlfriend is ruled competent to stand trial

A Lexington man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, dismembering her and throwing her remains into a Dumpster is mentally competent to stand trial, a judge has ruled.

Fayette Circuit Judge Thomas Travis issued the order Monday in the case of Patrick Ryan Jones.

Jones, 25, was indicted in September in the murder of Haley Bourgeois, 20. Jones was also indicted on charges of tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse.

Judge Travis heard sworn testimony on Friday from Dr. Amy Trivette, staff psychiatrist at the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center in La Grange, where Jones was evaluated.

After hearing the testimony, Travis ruled that Jones is able to consult with his attorneys “with a reasonable degree of rational understanding.”

Travis also ruled that Jones “has a rational as well as factual understanding of the proceedings against him.”

On July 21, 2016, police were dispatched to Malabu Drive after a body was found in a Dumpster behind Brookhaven Apartments, according to court documents. Those documents said a witness told officers that Jones admitted to killing Bourgeois, dismembering her and putting her in the Dumpster.

Bourgeois and Jones had a child together, court documents said. Records also show that Jones and Bourgeois had filed emergency protective orders against each other but the orders were later dismissed.

A trial date has not been scheduled for Jones.
