Crews start asbestos abatement work at former Woodhaven site

Asbestos abatement has begun at the former Woodhaven apartment complex, and demolition of the housing there could begin as soon as next week, according to city Public Works Commissioner Butch Conover. The contractor for the project, Bronze Contracting of Remsen, is first dealing with asbestos and will then be able to safely demolish the buildings. After the demolition, all that will remain of the 136 structures at the former apartment complex on Park Drive will be the concrete slabs they were built on.The project’s end date is Nov. 22, but Conover said the work will likely be done by October. The demolition work will be done during normal business hours on weekdays, so neighbors will not have to deal with the associated noise at night or on weekends, he noted.Conover also said the work “should have no effect” on the use of the back entrance to Rome Free Academy off Park Drive because crews will handle demolition on that side first, before school opens for the fall. The contract for this work is $1,295,000, and is being funded almost entirely by the state. After the demolition comes redevelopment. The city has $1.5 million in state funding for the demolition as well as for marketing the site as part of the larger 100-acre site that also encompasses the former Wright Park Manor apartment complex that fronts Floyd Avenue.
