MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Charges have been reduced against a Memphis father arrested after his 3-year-old son was shot and killed.
Cortez Wilkerson is now charged with reckless homicide, along with weapon and drug charges. That’s what he was originally charged with before the charges were upgraded to first degree murder and child abuse & neglect. A judge dismissed the upgraded charges, but the D.A. says they can still be presented to a grand jury.
Memphis police say Saturday, July 8th, three-year-old Kash Sharp was found lying on a walkway at the New Horizon Apartments in Whitehaven. He died at the hospital.
According to an affidavit, Wilkerson told police he awoke to a gunshot, and found Kash in his lap shot in the head. However, investigators say the physical evidence on the scene does not match that claim. (The affidavit does not go into further detail.)
Police at the scene say they also found marijuana, scales, baggies, and the gun and ammunition.
