Fire damages building at Autumn Park Apartments | News

Fire ripped through an apartment building south of Newark on Monday evening, displacing 12 families.

The flames broke out around 4:30 p.m. at Autumn Park Apartments, located in the 3700 block of Winterhaven Drive, behind Four Seasons Plaza.

Firefighters from Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Co. arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the third floor and roof in the back of the building, according to Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Robert Fox. Dozens of firefighters from 12 fire departments worked for nearly two hours to contain the fire.

No one was injured, and firefighters rescued four cats from the building. Fox said his office has not yet determined a cause for the blaze.

Aetna Assistant Chief Jeff Sands said firefighters faced “challenging weather conditions,” with snow and sleet falling and temperatures around the freezing mark.

The American Red Cross is assisting 12 families who were displaced by the fire.
