Traffic stop near campus leads to drug arrest

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —A man is facing multiple drug charges following a traffic stop near campus during the early morning hours of Wednesday (Aug. 23).

Slater M. Burge, 22, a senior from Indianapolis in the Krannert School of Management, was pulled over near the intersection of Stadium and Northwestern avenues for an alleged traffic violation shortly after midnight. Purdue police say Burge gave consent to search his vehicle, and they found pills, marijuana and a significant amount of cash. The police then obtained a search warrant for his Hilltop Apartment residence, where they say more pills, marijuana, paraphernalia and a large amount of cash were found.

Burge was preliminarily charged with operating while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, dealing marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, possession of a Schedule I, II, III or IV controlled substance, and dealing of a Schedule III controlled substance. He was being held on $15,000 surety bond.

Purdue police have turned the case over to the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office. The fact that a person has been arrested or charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.
