Woman shot in the head at University Trails apartment in Oxford

OXFORD, Miss. — A 28-year-old Oxford man is facing serious charges after his girlfriend was shot in the head overnight.

D'Marius Madkins was taken into custody around 12:30 a.m. after officers learned a woman had been shot at the University Trails apartment complex. When first responders arrived, the victim, Alisha Smith, 23, was sitting on the balcony and was able to speak with paramedics before she was flown to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis. Police believe the two may have been drinking.

She is listed in critical condition, but police say they've been in contact with Smith's mother to monitor how she's doing.

Authorities said they recovered the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting at the apartment.

Madkins was charged with domestic violence-aggravated assault after he admitted to the shooting. His charges could be upgraded.

Police said there were no previous reported incidents of domestic violence between the pair.

Earlier this month, Oxford police were called to the same apartment complex after 23-year-old Alan Clay allegedly assaulted a woman and then kidnapped her.

University of Mississippi released a statement on the shooting Thursday:

“The thoughts and prayers of the entire University of Mississippi community are with Alisha and her family. We’re thankful for a quick response from first responders and hopeful for Alisha’s full recovery," said Melinda Sutton-Noss, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students.
