Birmingham teen dies 4 days after accidental shooting

A Birmingham teen who police said was accidentally shot in the face one week ago has died.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office on Monday identified the victim as Antonio D. Foster. He was 16.

The shooting happened Aug. 15 inside an apartment in the Tom Brown Village housing authority.  Police received a call from the 4100 block of Messer Airport Highway about the teen victim around 10:39 p.m.

Birmingham police Lt. Sean Edwards that night said it appeared the teen accidentally shot himself. Authorities on Monday said two young men, including Antonio, were handling the weapon and it was not definitive whose hands the gun was in when it fired.

Antonio was taken to Children's of Alabama where he was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m. Saturday.

The investigation is ongoing. This story will be updated if more information becomes available.
