RANCHO CUCAMONGA: Apartment fire displaces 3 students

Grease left unattended on a stove sparked a fire in a Rancho Cucamonga apartment Sunday night, March 1, officials said.

The fire was reported at 8:44 p.m. on the second floor of a three-story apartment complex in the 10400 block of Arrow Highway, said Kelley Donaldson, spokeswoman for the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District.

A neighbor from the unit above used an extinguisher to help control the fire before firefighters arrived, Donaldson said.

About 20 firefighters contained the fire in less than 10 minutes. Damage was confined to the kitchen, she said.

Three displaced residents, all male students at a nearby vocational school, Universal Technical Institute, won’t be allowed to return until repairs are made, Donaldson said.

The school will find lodging for them in the meantime, she said.

No one was injured.

Firefighters briefly evacuated the 12-unit apartment building, she said.
