New apartments for domestic abuse survivors taking shape in Springfield

Springfield, MO A new apartment complex will provide a way for people to rebuild their lives following domestic violence situations.

Named "Talia," the community on South Scenic near Grand Street isn't just another new housing complex. Half the units will be for women (and their children) escaping violent home situations.

"Unfortunately, a lot of them don't make it long term because the options are not all that great," said Lisa Farmer, Director of Harmony House.

"It is the first project I think in the state of Missouri that is specifically dedicated to domestic violence survivors," said Bruce Adib-Yazdi of Vecino Group, which is the partnering developer on the project.

Farmer explained, "One of the problems we have is finding affordable, accessible permanent housing for our residents when they are ready to leave the shelter. So, this will help in that regard."

"What we are providing here is a permanent supportive housing solution for people to leave the shelter and have a permanent housing solution, and not worry about where they have to go after 90 days," said Adib-Yazdi.

Talia is designed with families in mind. So, the developers did their best to make it feel like home. A large courtyard will have a playground for the kids and a garden where residents can grow vegetables.

"Often, the the apartment they [domestic abuse survivors] find is not very nice, and maybe not very secure," explained Farmer. "They move in with maybe a mattress on the floor, a table lamp and a black and white TV. After a few weeks of that, guess what looks pretty good? Home. And they end up going back to their abuser.

These new places to call home will have state of the art security.

"And, we feel like it is an important trend-setting situation for us and to help fill a gap in their need," said Adib-Yazdi.

Harmony House and Vecino Group hope to be done with the project sometime in November.
