• John Lee Fleming, DMD, was honored with a Gold Certificate during the Alabama Dental Association's 2017 Awards presentation on June 11. The Association's coveted Gold Certificate signifies completion of 50 years of service in the profession of dentistry. The Alabama Dental Association's 148th annual Session and Gulf Coast Dental Conference was held at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, June 6-11. Fleming is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry and practiced general dentistry in Tuscaloosa.

• Josh and Nikki Williamson announce the launch of their new realty company, Williamson Realty Group. Williamson, a Tuscaloosa native, brings more than 12 years of experience in residential real estate, creating successful outcomes for many families in the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham area. Williamson was formerly with the KM group before starting his own agency. The Williamsons have two children and are members of Daystar Family Church.

• The Morrow Companies' annual staff meeting and awards banquet were held April 18 at The Hotel Capstone. Employees recognized include:

BMCC Employee of the Year: Chris Sharbutt, estimator/project manager at Bob Morrow Construction Co.

Site Manager of the Year: Patricia Andrews, site manager, at Oak Trace Apartments.

Highest Economic Occupancy Award for a HUD Property: Patricia Andrews, site manager, and Mark Dunn, maintenance technician, at Oak Trace Apartments. Given to the property whose apartments stay leased and whose rent is collected on time each month.

Maintenance Teamwork Award: Billy Edwards, maintenance technician at Saddlewood Apartments in Northport.

15 years of service award: Alice Kirkland, assistant estimator/project manager at Bob Morrow Construction Company; Billy Edwards, maintenance technician at Saddlewood Apartments in Northport; Steve Lenahan, maintenance coordinator at Morrow Realty Co. Inc.; and Pamela McGhee, district manager at Morrow Realty Co. Inc.

10 years of service award: Madelyn Romain, district technician at Morrow Realty Co. Inc.

But if you want to live within line-of-sight to the ocean, this place is as affordable as it gets. The manager is hands-down one of the nicest dudes I've met and has been extremely accommodating to us. Although the property is old, it's clean and decently kept up. The pool and hot tub are nice. We're on the 2nd floor in a corner unit and it's been very quiet for us. We haven't had any issues with bugs or vermin of any sort; in fact, we keep our porch door wide open all day long so our kitties can get some fresh air. This results in maybe 1 fly per day inside. Charlotte affordable housing forum raises possible solutions

There’s a big demand for more affordable housing in Charlotte, where rents and home prices have shot up much faster than wages over the past few years. Many of the apartments being built now target more affluent renters, waitlists for housing vouchers are long and starter homes are snapped up almost immediately. So why aren’t developers building more affordable housing ? That was one of the main questions at a candidate education panel hosted by the Greater Charlotte Apartment Association on Friday, where about two dozen candidates for Charlotte City Council turned out to learn some of the basics on a complicated subject. “ Affordable housing is one of the topics you’ll talk about a lot,” Bryan Holladay, who supervises the group’s government affairs outreach , told the candidates. The Starbucks coffee is always hot, and a fireplace keeps things cozy in cold or damp weather.  “I’ll just sit there sometimes and read the paper or one of the magazines they have, like Bon Appetit.
