Developers are planning on building over 1,600 apartment units, 75,000 square feet of retail and 50,000 square feet of offices.

Reno Lands Inc. say a few building will be up by the end of year and people will be able to move in next summer.

Several city and state leaders attended the ceremony including Governor Brian Sandoval, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve and U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez-Masto.

Governor Sandoval is pleased to see something being done to the vacant Park Lane Mall lot.

"Most exciting for me is the anticipation that is going on. I'm somebody that has been coming to this mall since 1970, it use to be the place. For it to get knocked down and essentially be a monument to the economy, where nothing was happening here. Now we are coming through this life cycle of the city and it's going to bring exciting things and be a quality place to live and work," said Governor Sandoval.

"I don't think Reno has ever seen anything like this come at them this is done a lot in the bay area, but Reno is ready for this type of development and we're here to deliver," said Chip Bowlby, Reno Land Inc. CEO.

The project is expected to cost $500,000. The project will be completed in phases over the next three to five years.
