INXS Mini-Series ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ Poised for Latin America Debut

The TV mini-series that catapulted INXS back to the summit in their homeland is about to air in Latin America, where the Australian rockers’ flame has burned impressively bright

“Never Tear Us Apart” begins its four-week primetime broadcast via satellite network DirecTV from Monday (Sept. 22). The series was a ratings hit earlier this year for free-to-air broadcaster Channel 7 in Australia. It also gave a big kick to INXS’ business -- and broke records in the process. History was created when The Very Best and Kick rose to No. 1 and No. 2 respectively off the back of the series, marking the first time a homegrown act had achieved the feat. At one stage, INXS boasted six albums in the top 20 of the ARIA Albums Chart. The Very Best held the top spot for seven weeks, and is the best-selling album in Australia for 2014. INXS is currently the best-selling act of the year Down Under.

INXS Creates Australian Chart History

INXS and Latin America share a lasting love affair. The band toured the region seven times -- 1985, 1991, 1994, 2002, 2006, and in 2011 (twice) and their 1984 hit “Original Sin” hit No. 1 in Argentina.

INXS’ creative director and global strategist Chris Murphy has long identified Latin America as a hotspot for his wards, and he’s hopeful the broadcast could blossom into another frenzy of record-buying activity. “Latin America has always been a very successful region for INXS thanks to their legions of fans across the continent,” Murphy tells Billboard. “We hope that they will enjoy the airing of the INXS story on DirecTV over the next month, along with the INXS marathon that will broadcast in early November and once again take INXS to the top of the charts there.”

According to Murphy’s research, Argentina and Brazil are among the top 10 countries of INXS fans and five of the top 10 cities of INXS fans come from the region. Spanish and Portuguese are the Nos 2 and 3 languages spoken on Facebook by INXS fans.

Murphy also said “there is a long term strategy in place as we continue to build the INXS brand globally” including the latest release, All The Voices, a 10-LP deluxe boxed set housing all key studio albums-re-mastered and packaged in exact replicas of the original vinyl albums. “We also have a number of other announcements to follow before the end of the year,” he adds.

INXS Confirm Split: 'It's Time to Step Away'

The surviving members of INXS announced in Nov. 2012 they were calling time on a career that had lasted 35 years and 11 studio albums, including six that sold platinum or better in the U.S.

“Never Tear US Apart,” which traces the global rise of the group and the loss of its charismatic frontman Michael Hutchence in 1997, debuted in the U.S. via Showtime. Murphy executive produced the mini-series along with INXS founding member Tim Farriss.

“Never Tear US Apart” airs on satellite network DirecTV from Monday at 9pm
