LIVINGSTON, Texas (AP) - A convicted killer sentenced to death three times for the 1983 botched robbery and fatal shooting of a Houston bar owner has died on Texas death row of apparent natural causes.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Robert Hurst says 71-year-old Raymond Deleon Martinez was found unresponsive Wednesday in his cell at the Polunsky Unit outside Livingston.

Martinez's original death sentence was overturned in 1988 for a jury selection problem. A second death sentence was thrown out in 2007 for a jury instructions issue. He returned to death row in 2009 after a third punishment trial.

Evidence showed Martinez, identified as a prison gang leader, was among three people who in July 1983 entered the Long Branch Saloon in Houston where owner Herman Chavis was fatally shot. They fled empty-handed.

Joseph Garcia is on Texas Death Row after being part of the notorious "Texas 7" gang of escaped prisoners.

Parents of Student Murdered by Maintenance Man Sue Apartment Complex

He pleaded guilty to murder late last year, now the case of a maintenance worker who killed a Blinn student is back in court. The parents of 20-year-old Jenna Verhaalen are suing the Bryan apartment complex where she was killed. Verhaalen was strangled at the Autumn Woods Apartments in 2008, by 27-year-old maintenance worker Jeremiah Rosser . The suit claims Autumn Woods ignored complaints made about Rosser. Specifically, a complaint they claim Jenna made to Rosser's boss, when he entered her apartment while she was in the shower. The suit alleges the complex's negligence led to Jenna's death. Attorneys for Autumn woods said management had no reason to believe Rosser was a risk. However, that's not what the complex's corporate office told News Three in 2008.
