Man Finds Hours-Old Baby Abandoned, Covered In Ants

A newborn baby girl is receiving medical attention after being found in the bushes at an apartment complex.

According to Harris County deputies, the child was found about 5 a.m.in a grassy area at the Bridges of Cypress Creek apartments on Red Oak Drive.

"I heard some crying and whining and crying, and I kept walking until I got closer to the noise, and then I looked at the ground and there was a baby down there", Albert Peterson told KHOU. Instead of going to work, Peterson took the baby back to his apartment to wait for authorities.

Investigators said they followed a trail of blood to a nearby apartment.

"Bro...that's insane. Somebody left their baby out here...you gotta call 911, bro", John Baldwin said in a video he shot. Bloody footprints left by the mother could be seen on the sidewalk.

Detectives knocked on the apartment's door, but the residents refused to open it. Inside they found two people, including a 21-year-old woman who admitted to being the baby's mother, according to KPRC. The unidentified woman claimed she didn't know anything about a baby girl being placed behind the bushes.

"He heard a murmur and a cry, what he thought was actually a cat", Harris County Deputy Thomas Gilliland told reporters.

The mother, who was not identified, could face charges of child abandonment.

The baby girl was transported to the hospital for evaluation and is in good health, the Daily Mail reports. "It's a miracle the child was found". Save haven laws allow mothers in crisis to leave their newborns in a safe environment, such as a hospital or fire station, without questions or repercussions. Her family says she has no history of criminal or psychiatric issues. He says he can't imagine how someone could abandon a helpless infant.
