Update: Suspect in Custody in Highway 58 SWAT Standoff

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The suspect in a SWAT standoff Friday afternoon is now in custody.

It happened at an apartment building on Highway 58 near Champion Road.

The Chattanooga police SWAT team stood outside of the building, armed, attempting to make contact with a barricaded suspect, who they’ve since identified as Walter Varnell.

Police say the 29-year-old had outstanding warrants for aggravated domestic assault.

Police had been on the scene for several hours, trying to get him to surrender.

Varnell was taken into custody around 10 p.m.

There’s a big demand for more affordable housing in Charlotte, where rents and home prices have shot up much faster than wages over the past few years. Many of the apartments being built now target more affluent renters, waitlists for housing vouchers are long and starter homes are snapped up almost immediately.
