Dewitt Clinton apartment project expanding - News - Uticaod

ROME — The apartment complex slated to be built at the site of the former Dewitt Clinton School is getting larger.

Rome's Common Council conducted a workshop with DePaul Properties last week, where representatives told them that they have expanded the project to include more units because of public feedback.

The new plan is to have 80 apartments of new housing with a 66-unit apartment building and 14 townhomes.

There will be 60 one-bedroom apartments and 20 two-bedroom units. Of those, 70 units are adaptable, which will be able to support those with mobility issues.

The original plan was to have 60 units with 56 one-bedroom apartments and four two-bedroom apartments.

Dewitt Clinton Apartments took another step forward at the Rome Common Council meeting last week, where after a public hearing where no one spoke, the council approved a zoning change. The vote changed the property to be a residential planned development district, which is considered an overlay to the existing zoning regulations.

The Rome apartments will rent for $650 for a one-bedroom, $750 for a two-bedroom and $950 for townhomes, all of which include utilities, internet, basic cable and laundry. There also will be ATMs, vending machines, a courtyard and a community room on site.

DePaul is a Rochester-based nonprofit that specializes in housing and support service programs.

The housing facility is marketed toward those families and individuals in the mid-market range, which means there is an income requirement to be accepted into the complex. People will not be kicked out of the housing if their income increases.

Income requirements are set at 60 to 90 percent of the Oneida County annual median income of $56,250 for a family of four and $26,280 for a single person.

DePaul plans to begin demolishing the 93-year-old former school building — which has been closed since 2001 — in March.

Once the demolition is done, the site will have to be cleaned up, which will include asbestos and other environmental remediation.

Construction on the new facility will begin after that and is expected to take between 18 and 24 months, so the apartments likely will be completed by 2020.
