NORTHPORT, AL (WBRC) -

A man accused of firing several shots into his neighbors' apartments told police he heard voices outside and thought "someone was after him," so he opened fire.

Northport police officers responded to the Saddlewood Apartments on Deerfield Lane after getting a report of shots being fired around 3 a.m. Friday.

Residents in two apartments told police the shots came from an adjacent apartment.

Officers found 25-year-old Mikequen Whitsett, a woman and three kids inside the apartment were the neighbors said the shots came from.

Whitsett told police he thought someone was coming for him, so he grabbed his gun “and began shooting from inside his apartment toward the outside,” Lt. Kip Hart with the Tuscaloosa County Homicide Unit said.

Officers arrested Whitsett on two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling. He's being held on a $60,000 bond.

Lt. Hart says more charges may be added as they continue to investigate. No one was injured in the shooting.
