Grand Rapids -- Fire damaged several apartments in a 16-unit building at Windridge Apartments off Camelot Drive SE.

The blaze broke through the roof and badly damaged the two-story building's roof line before firefighters brought it under control before 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Several tenants stood outside, including a woman crying because she lost her cat in the fire.

Another tenant, Angela Bierman, said she hoped she could recover her wedding photos and those of her parents.

"Within a very short period of time, the fire was going fast," said her husband, Rhett. He said he was sleeping in his lower unit when heard smoke detectors.
