Hurley Medical Center unveils wellness room at Oak Street Senior Apartments

FLINT, MI -- Hurley Medical Center will celebrate its continued partnership with Oak Street Senior Apartments by unveiling the new wellness exercise room.

Hurley and Communities First, Inc. will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new wellness room at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 28 at Oak Street Senior Apartments located at 1000 Oak Street in Flint.

The room will be filled with space for activities, exercise equipment and much more.

The partnership between Hurley and Oak Street Senior Apartments started nearly a year ago when the apartment building for low-income seniors opened. Hurley helped outfit their Health Services Room with an exam table, medical supplies and health literature.

Hurley staff help with routine health screenings and onsite nursing hours for one-on-one health and wellness coaching.

This is just another way hospitals in the Flint area are preparing to take care of the county's aging population

Even though Genesee County's overall population has shrunk 3 percent since 2000, the number of people 62 and older has increased from 60,376 to 74,866 people -- a 24 percent spike in that same time frame, according to new 2013 Census estimates released in December.

Hurley and Oak Street residents also joined forces for a pilot program where residents will receive "platinum cards" which can fast-track the admission process in Hurley's ER.

The card also can be used for discounts at Jazzman's cafe and the lobby shop, both located within Hurley Medical Center.

The partnership with Hurley will allow the seniors to build a relationship with their local hospital, said Glenn Wilson, president and CEO of Communities First, Inc., the nonprofit developer of Oak Street Senior Apartments, in a previous interview.

It will allow them to have access to a nurse or doctor and be able to answer any questions they may have and deal with medical issues proactively instead of reactively.

"Our goal as Oak Street's medical partner is to provide the residents with opportunities to take care of themselves, and implement health and wellness aspects into their daily living," said Alisa Craig, director of Wellness Services at Hurley, in a written statement. "This new activity workout room is another way to weave health, wellness and disease prevention into the residents' lives. It truly is a win-win situation."
