WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — Police say they have arrested a man for the homicide of his girlfriend, who was found dead in a Wyoming apartment early Wednesday morning.

The Wyoming Department of Public Safety says officers were called to an apartment complex in the 1400 block of 44th Street east of Burlingame Avenue SW around 5:50 a.m. to check on someone’s welfare.

Neighbor Sergio Valencia says he heard police knocking on a door at down the hall from where he lives at Woodcreek Apartments.

“I was awake because I was getting ready to go to school and I just heard a knocking on somebody’s door,” he said. “He was like, ‘It’s Wyoming Police Department.’ He said, ‘Open the door.'”

When officers got into the apartment, they found the body of a 31-year-old woman in the bathroom. She is believed to have died sometime overnight, though an afternoon release from Wyoming police did not indicate how she died. Her name has not yet been released pending notification of family.

Also in the apartment was the man police believe killed the woman. He was arrested.

“We believe it was a domestic relationship: boyfriend, girlfriend,” Wyoming DPS Lt. Mark Easterly told 24 Hour News 8.

Neighbors said they heard yelling in the apartment before police arrived.

Easterly said police are working to verify which of the three names the suspect is listed under is accurate.

When 24 Hour News 8 knocked at an apartment door that showed signs of police entry Wednesday afternoon, no one appeared to be home.
