A probationer allegedly crashed into a Murrieta apartment building while drunk, forcing residents to find other shelter for the night after utilities had to be turned off, according to a press release issued by the Murrieta Police Department.

Nichole Rae Winters, 41, of Temecula was arrested and booked into the Byrd Detention Center on Tuesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence, following the incident that forced the closure of Murrieta Hot Springs Road where the collision occurred.

According to Murrieta Police Lt. Mark Reid, Winters lost control of her four-door vehicle at about 9 p.m. and plowed into the structure near Calle Del Lago and Murrieta Hot Springs Road.

The car landed about three feet off the ground after Winters lost control and drove it through the wall of the apartment complex, landing in a first floor bathroom and causing extensive damage to the building which required the electricity and gas to be shut off for safety reasons.

The buildings occcupants were displaced and had to find temporary lodgings with the help of the Red Cross, Reid said.

The suspect was treated for minor injuries and arrested. She later posted a $2,500 bond.

According to court records, Winters has prior misdemeanor convictions for hit-and-run and failure to report an accident. She was sentenced to three years probation for the latter offense earlier this month.
