Deputies seek suspects who crashed stolen car

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Police say a stabbing and hostage situation in Kalamazoo Tuesday morning was a case of domestic violence.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas told 24 Hour News 8 the male suspect broke into a unit at Canterbury House Apartments where a woman he was separated from was living with her two kids. The apartment complex is located in the 600 block of Dragonfly Road south of Main Street and US-131 in Kalamazoo.

Police said the suspect stabbed a man inside the apartment. The woman and her two small children were able to escape to a neighbor’s apartment, but the suspect broke in through a window. The two kids were able to safely escape again, but the suspect held the woman hostage for some time.

The standoff between police and the suspect eventually ended around 6:45 a.m. and the suspect was taken into custody.

Authorities say the male victim is currently in surgery. He suffered several stab wounds, but police say he is in stable condition.

The female victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Undersheriff Matyas said there appears to be a history of domestic violence between the suspect and female victim.
