Shooting victim treated for life-threatening injuries - News - Tuscaloosa News

One man was jailed and another was fighting for his life Thursday following a shootout at a Tuscaloosa apartment complex.

The victim, 26, suffered life-threatening injuries during the Wednesday night shooting at Brookhaven Apartments. Investigators believe at least four people fired shots during an argument over a debt in the parking lot of the complex off James I. Harrison Parkway.

One of the suspected shooters was questioned Thursday and later charged with first-degree theft and possession of a firearm by a felon. Jerry "Pop" Edwards, 25, was being held Thursday afternoon in the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

The victim went to meet one of the suspects about an alleged debt just before 9 p.m., Hart said.

"It appears that this suspect and at least three others began shooting at each other," Hart said.  "Investigators have identified several people who may be involved and have spoken with several witnesses."

Authorities recovered more than 50 shell casings at the scene. Bullets struck five occupied apartments, one unoccupied apartment and five vehicles.

Homicide investigators released surveillance video from the complex that shows the shooters crouching behind cars and moving through the parking lot as the fired shots.

"You can tell he's not shooting in the air, he's shooting in their direction," Capt. Kip Hart, Tuscaloosa County Metro Homicide assistant commander, said of one of the suspects captured on video.

Edwards was being held at the Tuscaloosa County Jail Thursday with bond set at $45,000. He has previous convictions for receiving stolen property and robbery.
