On the Road Again: Sunshine Suppers go mobile to reach more people

Neighbors meeting neighbors is the goal of Sunshine Suppers on the Road with meals at Rolling Prairie and the Sun Prairie Fire Department coming during the next few weeks. After hearing about the first Suppers on the Road held at Hamilton Place apartments , Rolling Prairie resident leaders thought it would make sense for their community. 50 Foods You Need to Try

Image
Italy is known for some of the best foods in the world. It's home to some of the greatest bread, pasta, gelato, and wine, as we all know, but there are a lot of other delicious dishes that are lesser known, yet equally amazing. This past summer I got the wonderful opportunity to study abroad in Italy, making my way around several parts of the country and trying a ton of amazing foods that honestly, I now wish I would've eaten more of. You simply have  to visit Italy at least once in your life — I insist. I understand that the number of food options can be overwhelming and you might be unsure what to eat in Italy. So, the following is a list that my fellow Spoon members and I have put together for you on 50 of the foods that you absolutely must try there (although, I'd certainly advise you try more if you can). 1. Tomatoes Tomatoes ( pomodori ) are a huge part of Italian food culture , as they're the backbone of the most terrific sauces, soups, salads, and more. The mos...

In Mauritius, Secluded Beaches, Verdant Hills and Harmony

Image
“We’re a bit like a puzzle,” said Santosh, when we reunited on his turf over 15 years later. “There are very distinct pieces. People have held onto their own identities but found a way to make it work, so it fits into a picture of its own.” In the end, it’s that compelling mosaic that lured me to Mauritius’s shores. Scouring social media would lead a prospective visitor to believe that the island ends where the resorts do. I was eager to explore what lay beyond plunge pools and bath butlers. Photo The volcanic isle was first discovered by the Arabs in 975; but when the Dutch landed on Mauritius in 1598, it was uninhabited — aside from wildlife like the dodo, a bird famously rendered extinct by Europeans but still resplendent on Mauritian rupee notes today . The French came in the 1700s, followed by the British. With the 1835 abolition of slavery, migrants flooded in from the east: Indian indentured laborers and Chinese shopkeepers. The Indians’ struggles are chronicled in Port Louis...

Need to Get Away? Sunrise Farm B&B in Salem Is Just the Place

Operating a bed-and-breakfast out of an 1890s- era country home in tiny Salem, SC, wasn’t exactly on Julie and Jeff Pierce’s radar in 2004. Yes, she recalls that on their honeymoon, she had mentioned to her new husband that doing so was “my dream job.” But during the nine years the Midwest natives (Ohio for her, Michigan for him) lived in Fort Myers, Fla., and ran physical therapy and yoga practices , a B&B seemed just that: an in-the-future dream. But after visiting friends in the South Carolina Upcountry and enjoying the area’s hiking trails, lakes and waterfalls, the outdoors- loving couple decided to sell their businesses and move there. “We had no deep roots in Florida,” she says, “and we thought we’d maybe build a house on Lake Keowee, get a Jet Ski.” That all changed the day they visited Sunrise Farm , a local B&B since 1991. “Jeff saw in a real estate magazine that it was for sale,” Julie says. “We came just to look at it; Jeff thought it was just a look, ...

The cozy Gîte de l'Artiste Perron is St-Sauveur's newest B&B. Courtesy of Gîte de l'Artiste Perron Raymonde Perron wants you to do more than simply sleep and eat at her new B&B in St-Sauveur. She wants to you have a sensory experience. Perron is an artist and art teacher, and the Gîte de l’Artiste Perron is her gallery. You can gaze at canvases of flora and wetlands, and study the genre she calls “expressive realism.” The Lower Laurentians’ newest B&B is on a quiet, tree- lined residential street less than two kilometres from the centre of St-Sauveur. Perron and her husband, Jean-Marc Houle, transformed the lower- level bachelor apartment of their fieldstone bungalow into a getaway including two guest rooms with queen-size beds, plus a smaller room for children. Everything was rebuilt from scratch — floors, walls, ceilings, electricity and heating — so it’s fresh and inviting. The house is surrounded by hydrangeas, cherry trees, evergreens and Japanese lilac...
