Vigil To Mark 1-Year Anniversary Of Flower Branch Apartments Explosion

SILVER SPRING, MD — Thursday is the one-year anniversary of the devastating explosion at the Flower Branch Apartments that killed seven residents, two of whom were children, and displaced about 100 people. A vigil will be held to remember the victims Thursday evening . The Aug. 10, 2016 blast was caused by a natural gas leak . A total of 28 apartment units were destroyed, and 50 families were displaced by the disaster. Dozens of residents were injured at the scene, some from burns and others from broken bones as they jumped from the third and fourth floors of the buildings. The vigil will be held by the nonprofit CASA from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot across the street of 8658 Piney Branch Rd. The vigil will honor those lost and the families of the victims will be invited to speak. Captain's Mast The following is from the journals of the Seward Police Department . Those who have been arrested or summoned are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law. Aug. 9 0121 - The night auditor from the Hotel Seward reported AK/LIC JDV548 with its lights on across the street and wanted to make sure that the vehicle owner was not having a problem. Officer found no one in the car. 0131 - RP reported that subject died at Fifth Avenue. Officer responded and notified the Medical Examiner as there was not a comfort one or advanced directive in place. The medical examiner released the body to the family. Aug. 12 1604 - RP found a wallet containing debit cards, from different people, a social security card and a driver’s license near the Chamber of Commerce. He is from Suffield, Connecticut. They earlier recovered the remains of Electronics Technician 3rd Class Kenneth Aaron Smith , 22, who the Navy listed as being from New Jersey. His mother said Smith grew up in Novi, Michigan, and moved to Norfolk, Virginia, as a teenager with his father. The military said five sailors were injured and 10 were missing following Monday's collision. The Navy said missing soldiers were from Missouri, Texas, Maryland, Ohio, New York, Connecticut and Illinois. The collision tore a hole in the ship's left rear hull and flooded adjacent compartments , including crew berths and machinery and communication rooms.
