Essay on Colonization Explored in Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe

:: 2 Works Cited Length: 1431 words (4.1 double-spaced pages) Rating: Purple       Open Document - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Written by Chinua Achebe , “Things Fall Apart” describes European imperialism through the eyes of the Nigerian tribesmen as they interact with European colonists. What makes this piece of literature valuable is not the fact that it criticizes imperialism; it is the way in which it criticizes imperialism. Achebe portrays the African tribes as having very rich civilized and social cultures, not as being animalistic savages, which other literatures would lead one to believe. Because of this, the reader is able to connect with the mindset of an African native. This enables the reader to view imperialism from the opposite side of the spectrum, as people whose culture is being destroyed by foreign invaders (Shmoop). Achebe uses the ill-fated Okonkwo as a vehicle for this enlightenment. Okonkwo is a well-respected member of...

The Forgotten History of Black Chefs

APPRENTICES WANTED. One or two colored or black Girls will be taken as Apprentices, for a certain term of years, to the PASTRY BUSINESS, by a free colored woman , who is a complete PastryCook. Proper care will be taken of those placed with her. Apply at the fruit store, No. 81 East Bay. — CHARLESTON COURIER (DECEMBER 2, 1830) Therese Nelson, a dear friend and chef, and I are talking in her Harlem apartment. It’s crowded with cookbooks stacked to the ceiling. Therese is a passionate creative and learner, and we share a love of black culinary history . She runs a site and Facebook page that celebrate just that. For Therese, and many chefs of color, the classroom was not the place where they learned about themselves and the culinary past of the African American people . “ Culinary school s, just like regular school growing up, don’t really teach you your history. You never heard about James Hemings or Hercules or Malinda Russell or Abby Fisher or anybody like that in any of your classes...

The Plaza Is for Sale, but a Part-Owner Has Other Ideas

“We are not selling our stake and are comfortable with our rights relating to any sale by others,” said Sarmad Zok, chief executive of the prince’s company, Kingdom Hotel Investments . “We are proud to have partnered with Ashkenazy to reinstate the glory of this unique asset.” The partners have a plan for an extensive modernization program to better compete with other five-star hotels in Manhattan and to reopen areas of the hotel that have been bogged down in renovations. The Plaza’s famous Oak Room and the wood- paneled Oak Room Bar have been closed for the past six years. Whether Mr. Roy and Sahara truly intend to sell or are merely trying to bolster the price, they appear to be pressing forward. “We’ ll solicit bids ,” said Jeffrey Davis, an international director of JLL, who is overseeing the bidding for Sahara. “It’s the most iconic real estate asset in the world. It’ ll garner international attention .” Mr. Davis declined to comment on whether Kingdom Hotel Investments has ...

Most American Indian tribes opt out of federal death penalty - KFDA

By FELICIA FONSECA and RUSSELL CONTRERAS Associated Press FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - American Indian tribes for decades have been able to opt into the death penalty for certain federal crimes on tribal land. Nearly all reject it. Tribes and legal experts say the decision goes back to culture and tradition, past treatment of American Indians and fairness in the justice system. For those on the Navajo Nation, the sexual assault and murder of an 11-year-old girl near Shiprock, New Mexico, has reignited the issue. Ashlynne Mike's mother has been urging the tribe to opt in to the death penalty, particularly for crimes that involve children. But the Southwestern tribe has long objected to putting people to death. The culture teaches that all life is precious. One federally recognized tribe , the Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma, has opted in. Copyright 2017 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Trip Report for Naked Capitalism Meetups in Burlington, VT and Montréal, PQ

Image
By Lambert Strether of Corrente. We had our Naked Capitalism meetup in Burlington Thursday, August 17, and our meetup in Montréal on Friday, August 18. Seven NC readers attended the Burlington Meetup, some coming a long distance; fourteen — I think, we had to add a table — came to Montréal. I thought both numbers were remarkable; strangers coming together for no other reason than that they read the same blog speaks to a great hunger for connection, IMNSHO, and speaks well of the blog. In Burlington, we met at Zero Gravity Brewpub at Flatbread ( excellent craft beer , excellent pizza). In Montréal, we met at Le Café Cherrier (cuisine bourgeois, again excellent, and bringing back very happy memories for me. And a big hat tip here to the Montréal organizer for selecting the venue; I’m anonymizing them because I’m not sure they wish to be named). Both meetups were very convivial — conviviality is important — and both establishments let us sit and chat for a long time. I hadn’t been to e...

Sarah Uhl: Illustrator, Adventurer - REI Co-op Journal

Image
Once poised for the Olympics for track cycling, today, after a decade of searching for her greater purpose, Sarah Uhl shares her creativity and love of nature with the world through her art. Sarah Uhl is lying face down in a field of green grass and bright yellow flowers , her legs sprawled out behind her, chin no more than a foot away from her painting. The fingers on her left hand press backward from holding her work in place against the earth. She grips a pen in her right, meticulously drawing out a section. Her brown locks creep out the sides of her purple synthetic hoody . Eyes focused. Attention complete. Just like when she was cycling. Her drive comes from the need to examine herself through exploring “the growth that comes with each new chapter of our lives. That’s what I do with my art, it’s a pliable canvas,” she says. “It’s a hunger to keep growing, to evolve, to push myself outside of my comfort zone.” On the page is an interpretation of her surroundings, which “exists ...

How the New, Weird Suburbs Inspired EMA’s Noise Folk

Image
EMA: “I like long synth songs with a story about fucked-up suburban life.” Alicia Gordon Noise- folk artist EMA ’s new record, Exile in the Outer Ring , began life in 2015 in a white dome in MoMA P.S.1’s snow-covered courtyard. For four hours on a Sunday in February, she sculpted soundscapes from atop a platform set up like the blandest of living rooms: TV, palm plant, messy coffee table , Ikea lamp. She never addressed the crowd; she was in a bubble inside the bubble of the dome, her audience an intermediate layer that formed a ring around the stage. “I like the idea of multiple realities layered on top of each other,” she says. “And that space from the performance — this generic American apartment , with beige carpeting and a shitty couch, slit blinds, a ceiling fan — that’s where I wrote the record from.” EMA, whose full name is Erika M. Anderson, worked on Exile in her similarly bland apartment outside Portland, Oregon, where she’s lived since 2010. “I feel like that apartment,...

The Latest: White Oak Bayou residents face ponder evacuation

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The man accused of plowing a car into a crowd protesting a white supremacist rally in Virginia had been photographed hours earlier carrying the emblem of one of the hate groups that participated in the event. Vanguard America on Sunday denied any association with the suspect, even as a separate hate group involved in Saturday’s rally pledged on social media to organize future events that would be “bigger than Charlottesville.” The mayor of Charlottesville and political leaders of all political stripes vowed to combat the hate groups and urged President Donald Trump to forcefully denounce the organizations that had promoted the protest against the removal of a Confederate statue. Some of those groups specifically cited Trump ’s election after a campaign of racially charged rhetoric as validation of their beliefs. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced late Saturday that federal authorities would pursue a civil rights investigation into the circums...
