Central Valley School District buys Broadway Square apartment complex > Spokane Journal of Business

Spokane Valley - based Central Valley School District has bought for $2.3 million the Broadway Square Apartments complex at 11910 E. Broadway, in Spokane Valley , and plans to demolish it to make room for the envisioned replacement of North Pines Middle School , says Ben Small, district superintendent . North Pines Middle School , which serves about 500 students, is located on 14.5 acres of adjacent land at 607 N. Pines Road. Small says the district bought the 2.4-acre, 50- unit apartment complex with funds from a $ 113 million bond measure , which voters approved in February 2015. The district anticipates including construction funding for the planned middle school relocation project in a future ballot measure that would go before voters in the spring of 2018, he says. Small says a district facilities assessment conducted in 2010 concluded North Pines Middle School should be replaced. “Its systems and structures...

A tale of two statues: Confucius and Lin Zexu

Geoff Lee in front of the Confucius statue, listening to the audio from the Talking Statues project . Photos by Bill Weinberg BY BILL WEINBERG | Confucius is talking now. The statue of the ancient sage stands at Chinatown’s Confucius Plaza — where Division St. meets Bowery — just outside the housing complex of the same name, built in the 1970s for the neighborhood’s booming population. Now there’s a sign standing beside him with a scannable code that brings his voice to life on your smart phone — or an impersonation of it across the centuries. This is part of the Talking Statues project , now in New York after setting up at such landmarks in several European cities. Thirty-five statues in all five boroughs are thusly brought to life — including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Mohandas Gandhi in Union Square. Confucius urges his modern tech-savvy listeners to “study the past if you would divine the future,” and espouses his ethics of perseverance, filial piety and self-cultiva...

Boca developer has grand plan for West Palm Beach land near Northwood

Offices, a grocery store and “micro-condominiums” might soon rise out of the ground on a prime piece of land in West Palm Beach west of Northwood Village. These are the first projects that Boca Raton-developer Mario Caprini wants to build as part of an ambitious $70 million complex dubbed Northwood Common s, on a 3.5- acre parcel owned by the West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency . Can Caprini get the job done? His company’s website lists his prior development work in Canada and Ohio, including 1,000 residential units, 5 million square feet of industrial parks and “hundreds of thousands” of square feet of office, retail and medical buildings. In South Florida, Caprini recently completed construction of a “green” home in Pompano Beach at 4620 N.W. 18th Ave. The project, dubbed Modernista, was recognized by the mayor of Pompano Beach in March and won a national award in February from the Structural Insulated Panel Association , earning first place in the affordable housing...

Westminster residential properties are reaching new heights of luxury

[Sponsored Article] London has remained a firm favorite of Hong Kong property buyers all through the UK's difficult financial year , with the struggling pound offering substantial discounts to overseas investors. This interest is partly because of the housing bargains springing up in newly regenerated areas of the British capital, such as Nine Elms and Canary Wharf. However, it's London's famous central boroughs that offer the greatest returns for serious investors, with house prices set to surge over the next few years. Westminster is one such prime location. One of London's most historic and well-connected boroughs, house prices in SW1 are expected to rise by 31.9 percent by 2021 according to Barclays research , making Westminster one of the UK's fastest growing areas . With Westminster real estate already commanding some of the highest prices in London, this increase represents significant profit margins for buy-to-sell investors. Royal living style For m...

Developer's $1-billion plan for old O.C. Register site envisions a 'mini urban city'

Image
Two years ago, developer Mike Harrah joined a bid to purchase the Orange County Register out of bankruptcy. The effort ultimately failed . But the flamboyant local construction magnate with a ZZ Top beard still acquired the Register’s Santa Ana real estate , currently vacant after the publication decamped to Anaheim this spring. With the Register gone, Harrah is now embarking on an ambitious $1-billion plan for the 20- acre Grand Avenue site , proposing to build Orange County ’s tallest buildings, more than 1,000 residences, a 171-room hotel, offices and retail shops. In all, Harrah’s Caribou Industries envisions a 2.3-million-square- foot development known as 625IVE that serves as a gateway to historic downtown Santa Ana , where hip restaurants and shops are opening just a mile away. And he’s signed up prominent architecture firm Gensler to work on it. Harrah, himself, has been credited with helping kick-start the revitalization early last decade after he acquired buildings in t...

Board in favor of Logan Square apartment initiative

Pharos-Tribune (Logansport, IN) Aug. 24--A Logansport commission is planning to support a housing project in a downtown building with $160,000 and a five- year tax abatement . Bill Cuppy, executive director of the Cass- Logansport Economic Development Organization and Logansport- Cass County Chamber of Commerce, discussed the project at a Logansport Redevelopment Commission meeting on Wednesday. The project involves the Logan Square Building at Third Street and East Broadway. The vacant five- story building consists of about 45, 000 square feet and has a parking lot with about 75 spaces. Cuppy's presentation indicated Lafayette- based FRG Management is pursuing the project. The company bought the building in June and is willing to invest $3.2 million, Cuppy said. FRG Management wants to make the building's first floor mixed-use commercial, Cuppy continued, adding the firm is in talks to provide office space to a financial adviser and an attorney. Cuppy added the firs...

We love New York business. Here are 25 reasons why

Image
1. If you can make it here… New York has long been the ultimate testing ground for businesses. But the city’s population density also makes it an important laboratory for startups, especially in today’s on-demand economy. Food- delivery pioneer Seamless survived the dot-com crash, paving the way for the arrival of meal-kit services such as Blue Apron and Plated a decade later. Related View this story in its original print layout Density has also been instrumental to the growth of ride-hailing and car-sharing companies. Most of them, including Uber and Lyft first gained their footing in smaller cities, then made New York their biggest market. Via, the on-demand ride-pooling service, launched here in 2013, is the exception: Its founders chose New York, figuring riders packed together on subways and buses wouldn’t need much persuading to share a car with strangers, especially when it cost just $5. article continues below advertisement App- based transportation startups have flocked t...
