Kate Bramson Journal Staff Writer journalkate PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Delays by the South Street Landing developers to begin construction early this year on two apartment buildings on a nearby Davol Square parking lot have caused the City Council to consider issuing the project a notice of default. After the developer missed a Jan. 27 deadline to get all city construction permits , the council's Finance Committee voted this month to recommend to the City Council that the city issue a default notice to CV River House LLC , of San Diego, the entity that has planned to build the River House apartments . The default would be for missing a deadline in the project's city tax-stabilization agreement, which limits taxes owed over 15 years to about $3.3 million. The council is expected to consider the issue Thursday night . It could vote to issue the notice or send the matter back to committee. "In order to preserve our rights under the [tax-stabilization agreement], we have to...

7 of Asia's most spectacular resort residences | Property Market

Image
By Diana Hubbell Travellers have long looked towards Asia – with its shimmering azure waters and near-limitless selection of palm-fringed white-sand beaches – in their search for paradise. Intrepid hippies put the area on the map as a tourist destination in the 1960s. The intervening years, meanwhile, have seen rustic bamboo beach shacks edged out by a growing phalanx of upscale hotels and resorts. Indeed, these days it is just as likely to be high- powered investors making for the region’s resort destinations as singlet-wearing backpackers and other holidaymakers.   Countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia and the Philippines, can ably cater to the most demanding of buyers, with sumptuous properties ranging from secluded island hideaways to palatial residences with easy access to first-class restaurants and highly developed transport infrastructure . In Mauritius, Secluded Beaches, Verdant Hills and Harmony

Image
“We’re a bit like a puzzle,” said Santosh, when we reunited on his turf over 15 years later. “There are very distinct pieces. People have held onto their own identities but found a way to make it work, so it fits into a picture of its own.” In the end, it’s that compelling mosaic that lured me to Mauritius’s shores. Scouring social media would lead a prospective visitor to believe that the island ends where the resorts do. I was eager to explore what lay beyond plunge pools and bath butlers. Photo The volcanic isle was first discovered by the Arabs in 975; but when the Dutch landed on Mauritius in 1598, it was uninhabited — aside from wildlife like the dodo, a bird famously rendered extinct by Europeans but still resplendent on Mauritian rupee notes today . The French came in the 1700s, followed by the British. With the 1835 abolition of slavery, migrants flooded in from the east: Indian indentured laborers and Chinese shopkeepers. The Indians’ struggles are chronicled in Port Louis...

Tuvalu: Why is this Polynesian paradise the least visited place in the world?

Image
Why is this Polynesian paradise the least visited place in the world? Tucked away in the South Pacific, Tuvalu is a picture-perfect collection of nine islands, sitting about halfway between Hawaii and Australia. But according to a new report by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Tuvalu was the least visited place on the planet in 2016. It welcomed 2,000 tourists over 12 months, despite having a warm tropical climate and low crime. Its nearest neighbour Kiribati had more than double the visitors in 2016, totalling 5,000. What Tuvalu lacks in architectural splendour, it makes up for in empty, palm tree-fringed beaches. The islands are not built up and the population of 10,000 is thinly spread. But there is a strong traditional local culture , kept alive by the people of Tuvalu. You can watch traditional dancing , basket weaving and woodcarving by local people. The main island is Funafuti, and on its western side you can find the Funafuti Conservation Area , which h...

Gargoyle Hunting in New York City

Image
Author John Freeman Gill takes Fodor’s on an urban safari. If you make the effort to gaze skyward in New York, you will discover (hiding in plain sight) a city teeming with remarkable architectural sculptures : gryphons and sea monsters, cherubs and pelicans, goddesses and kings. These exuberantly expressive artworks were the creation of gifted immigrant stone carvers who poured into New York in the late 19th and early 20th centuries , most of them from the British Isles, Germany, and Italy. The ornament on the grandest edifices was typically specified by architects, but on the vast majority of city buildings , the design of the carvings was left up to the individual stoneworker. The carvers took this freedom and ran with it, incising their imaginations into New York’s skyline and transforming its streetscape into a marvelously quirky public art gallery . 555 Washington Avenue John Freeman Gill Ever since my novel, The Gargoyle Hunters , was published, I’ve been besieged by readers a...
