Boca developer has grand plan for West Palm Beach land near Northwood

Offices, a grocery store and “micro-condominiums” might soon rise out of the ground on a prime piece of land in West Palm Beach west of Northwood Village. These are the first projects that Boca Raton-developer Mario Caprini wants to build as part of an ambitious $70 million complex dubbed Northwood Common s, on a 3.5- acre parcel owned by the West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency . Can Caprini get the job done? His company’s website lists his prior development work in Canada and Ohio, including 1,000 residential units, 5 million square feet of industrial parks and “hundreds of thousands” of square feet of office, retail and medical buildings. In South Florida, Caprini recently completed construction of a “green” home in Pompano Beach at 4620 N.W. 18th Ave. The project, dubbed Modernista, was recognized by the mayor of Pompano Beach in March and won a national award in February from the Structural Insulated Panel Association , earning first place in the affordable housing...

Riviera Beach Man Held Without Bond After Allegedly Setting Fire To Apartment With Children Inside

A Florida judge denied bond for 22-year-old Velmando Williams, who is being accused of locking three children in a bedroom before setting fire to their apartment after an argument with their mother, according to the Palm Beach Post . Last week, a Stonybrook Apartment fire nearly took the lives of three children. It was reported that Tranice Smith, 19, and Williams, who is the father two of her children, was in a heated argument. Smith stated that she was cut in the back of the head and held down by her shirt. When she was able to break free, she said she ran out of the apartment and told Williams that she was going to call the police. That’s when Williams told her that he was going to set the apartment on fire before slamming and locking the door. Williams allegedly locked the three children in a bedroom inside the Stonybrook Apartment before setting fire to the couches in the living room by using cooking oil. Afterward, he jumped from an open window and fled the scene, according t...

The blog post below, you can say, “struck a nerve”.

An old, really bad idea is new again in The Palm Beach Post ! “We’re in a housing crisis !” “Why can’t we just live in shipping containers?” Sometimes a really, really bad idea just won’t go away as evidenced by the increasing number of shipping containers being stored and used in the Park of Commerce. Already some are suggesting, “Hmmm, those would make good homes for people.”. These containers, if you didn’t know, are those large containers that get placed on tractor trailers and trains for distribution of commodities, products, etc. throughout the country. You’ll also see these containers used by companies for storage, temporary and permanent, on back lots and work sites. Starting next month and into October–December a lot of people will be returning to our region — many of whom have struggled to solve societal issues such as homelessness, unsuccessfully in other areas of the country — but are suddenly the ‘experts’ on how to solve those same vexing problems here in South Florid...

Homeowners oppose Toscana Isles workforce apartments planned...

The mood was tense, the hour was late and the conflict had a familiar ring to it. Ansca Homes is seeking permission to build 206 apartments on Hypoluxo Road, and the neighbors were not happy. “There are two sets of property rights here, the existing communities and the people who want to build,” Palm Beach County Commissioner Shelly Vana said. “I hope the answer is something everybody can live with.” Vana reminded the homeowners that workforce housing , which accounts for 142 of the 206 apartments, is a mandatory program heavily supported by the Palm Beach County Commission . It was declared to be at a crisis level in 2005. Vana added that it would behoove the developer to make any concessions it could, even though some had already been made. At the Wednesday night meeting west of Boynton Beach, a dozen homeowners representing six nearby communities called the planned apartment complex “an eyesore” and “a Pandora’s box.” Homeowners mainly objected to the rental units, which they...
