Once Homeless, Iraq War Veteran Moves Into Unique New Home in Orange County

Image
Vernon Poling was 44 years old when he finally got a home of his own. The Iraq War veteran was medically discharged from the Army in 2014, had to quit his trucking job for medical reasons, and found himself living out of his pickup last year in Orange County, a sprawling area of Southern California known for beaches, Disneyland and high housing costs . Poling was homeless for seven months before he found temporary housing in the area. He then learned about Potter's Lane, an apartment complex made from recycled shipping containers , just for homeless veterans. It's believed to be the first of its kind in the U.S. On a sunny Friday in April, Poling walked into his 480-square-foot (45-square-meter) apartment for the first time, set down his backpack on his new floor and took it all in. In this Monday, Aug. 14, 2017 photo, Iraq war veteran Vernon Poling , 44, who was homeless for seven months, rests in his apartment made out of shipping containers in Midway City, Calif. Poli...

Apartments for Rent in Marietta, GA - From $750 a month

Image
Marietta, GA Area Information Marietta is one of the largest suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. Its residents are both blue-collar and white-collar workers, and it has a decidedly young population , with many well-educated singletons in their 20s and 30s. One of the best things about renting an apartment in Marietta is the community feel. Its picturesque central square is host to weekly farmers markets and annual cultural events , such as Art in the Park. Renting an apartment in Marietta puts you close to lots of Southern history. Lovers of yore will enjoy six historic districts, a number of museums, and Kennesaw House, one of the few buildings that remained standing after the city was burned to the ground during General Willian T. Sherman?s March to the Sea. From Marietta, commuters can hop on I-75 southbound to drive to jobs in Atlanta. Commuters who want to avoid Midtown or Downtown Atlanta can take the I- 285 Perimeter highway south to I-20 or east/northeast to Sandy Springs and Dunwo...

Photo Of Missing Danielle Stislicki Appears On Dating App « CBS Detroit

Image
FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) – Someone is apparently using a photo of a missing 28-year-old Farmington Hills woman on a dating app. A metro Detroiter on Monday shared a Facebook post from a male friend who found a much-circulated photo of Danielle Stislicki as he was browsing profiles on the app. Using the screen name “Looking3thcat,” whoever is using the missing woman ’s photo claims to be 22 years old and living in Indiana. Missing Danielle Stislicki Appears On Dating App" title="Photo Of Missing Danielle Stislicki Appears On Dating App" /> (Facebook screenshot) Stislicki’s mother, Ann Stislicki, said this is clearly a case of someone posing as her daughter. “Oh gosh; it’s not her, no it’s not,” she told WWJ Newsradio 950 . “It’s someone unfortunately who’s tapping into unfortunate circumstances.” It’s a high-profile case; and, with so many photos of her daughter out there, Ann Stislicki said the family has been concerned that issues like this might arise.”It’s an unf...

In the ’90s, We Had ‘Friends.’ Now They Call It Co-Living.

Image
More prosaically, co-living can simply mean roommates and common rooms, like a dorm. For some developers, it’s a form of adaptive reuse: many co-living sites, like WeLive at 110 Wall Street , are leased, in this case from the landlord of what once was an office building, drained of its tenants by Hurricane Sandy. Slide Show Adventures in Co-Living Credit Photographs by Andrew White for The New York Times There are still co-living evangelists, like Brad Hargreaves of Common, who has promised that “the genuine and organic relationships our members build with each other,” as he wrote in a post for Medium, would not be tainted by allowing journalists to sleep over at Common properties (though they were welcome to tour). With over $23 million in financing, Common now operates in five cities, including out of eight houses in New York City. Some co-living ventures have collapsed under the weight of their ideals, like the utopian Pure House , started by Ryan Fix, now 42, in his Williamsburg l...

Editta Sherman’s Long Reign as ‘The Duchess of Carnegie Hall’

Image
For a family, the quarters were cramped: 900 square feet, with a closet-size kitchen and a bathroom down the hall. For an artist, which Ms. Sherman considered herself to be, Studio 1208, was near-ideal. It was flooded with light from skylights and floor-to- ceiling windows facing north toward Central Park. And it was surrounded by stimulating, photogenic neighbors. The whole complex, with its rehearsal rooms, ballet and drama studios and work-live cells, was a hive of talent. Marlon Brando, Norman Mailer and Marilyn Monroe had been, or would be, in temporary residence; musical traffic came and went in Carnegie Hall downstairs ; Manhattan was just outside the door. New York’s Trump Tower, a sky-high home for celebrities and charlatans

Image
Hillary Clinton slept here. The year was 2000. Clinton was in the middle of her first political campaign, running to be New York’s junior senator. Steven Spielberg, an enthusiastic donor to Mrs Clinton who had the use of a pied-à-terre in Trump Tower purchased for him by Universal Pictures, barely stayed at the place, despite its views of Central Park, and offered it to the candidate as a crash pad on gruelling campaign days . Trump Tower in New York. Photo: Bloomberg Donald Trump and Clinton were on good terms back then. He donated money to her candidacy and called her “tough and smart”. Moreover, Trump was skilled in the art of spinning his associations with celebrities into publicity. This was particularly true at Trump Tower. Michael Jackson lived in Donald J. Where to find the best street art in South America

Image
For those that have spent even a small amount of time in South America, there will always be certain details that stay with them. The ever-present soundtrack, be it from bars, market stalls, processions, or, most commonly, a dodgy mobile phone speaker . The veritable selection of street dogs all vying for your attention, or the last bite of your empanada, and colour – colour literally everywhere. Rainbow costumes and national flags, the bright red of Coca-Cola signs and local beer companies and the kaleidoscopic hues of colourful walls that can be found in almost every town and city. It seems fitting then, that artists from across the world look to South America as the perfect canvas for their work, and why this varied continent is home to so much exceptional street art . And yet, graffiti here is so much more than simply art, or the curated outpourings of a disenfranchised youth. In a part of the world that has seen so much turmoil, lived through tumultuous civil wars and faces...
