null A major Evansville apartment complex is the focus of an on-line petition to shut it down after the recent case of a teenager found dead . The petition on Change.org calls for Mayor Lloyd Winnecke to shut down the Woodland Park Apartments and find better housing for current residents . Jeremy Wakefield, a former resident at the complex says he started it to start a conversation, and to start action at improving living conditions . It comes more than a day after Caleb Luckett was found dead in one of the apartments. Two new apartment complexes coming soon to Woodland Park

WOODLAND PARK - Within the next year, Woodland Park will have more than 200 additional apartments within its city limits, paving the way for small boost in population. Developers are getting ready to break ground on two multi- family rental complexes in the town of more than 7,000 people that lies in the mountains west of Colorado Springs. A 168-unit project has been in the works for almost two years and will be built on East Sheridan Avenue just east of U.S. 24 on the western end of town. Another complex with 42 rental units will be built on Colorado Highway 67 less than two miles north of U.S. 24. Brian Fleer, the executive director of Woodland Park's Office for Economic and Downtown Development, said the sudden emergence of the apartment projects is a reflection of what's become a statewide and national trend. "It's a microcosm of what's happening in Colorado Springs, in Denver and what's happening nationally," Fleer said. "Multi- family hous...

On a sunny summer weekday , a 15- passenger van pulled into the Woodland Park apartment complex in north Madison. A bunch of kids stood on the curb, assembled in a pseudo line, waiting for the van, excited and jostling for a better position. “You guys got Cheetos?” a little boy yelled out. The kids know the drill: the van comes every day to bring them free lunch and they wait as the volunteers set up the day's offerings: first carrots, then yogurt, crackers, a fruit snack, sandwich and juice boxes. The service is from The River Food Pantry as part of its Madison Urban Nutritional Children ’s Hotspot (MUNCH) program. When school’s not in session, MUNCH delivers lunch to kids eight north side low -income neighborhoods who might otherwise go without. THE NEED: ‘THIS IS ALL WE HAVE’ The MUNCH program started last summer and delivered over 10,000 lunches in 2016. This year, they’ve added more neighborhoods to their route and have already delivered over 30,000, with an average of ab...
