On the Zeke Elliott Suspension: Even a Liar Can Be Beaten and Choked

Image
Tiffany Thompson put herself out there. In a pink bra, black pencil skirt , and black pumps, her hair pulled back in a tight bun, a black choker tied around her neck, she stands in front of a wrought-iron fence on a sidewalk at night. Presumably it is in front of the Short North Carriage House , a vacation rental that Ezekiel Elliott’s father had rented for his 21st birthday in Columbus, Ohio’s equivalent of Uptown. She stands, expressionless, for a series of police photographs of her bruises — on her arms and wrists. There are several shots of her hands, but those don’t appear to be injured in the photos. In the police report there is a diagram, essentially a pencil drawing of a female figure where injuries can be marked. Ten areas are circled and marked with a “V” for “Visible Bruise, Mark or Injury,” from her neck to her knees. Like everyone else, I had been reading snippets about the allegations of domestic violence against the Dallas Cowboys’ star running back in news reports ...

Life without parole sentence unconstitutional for juveniles

GATESVILLE, Texas (KWTX) There are 12 state prison inmates in Texas serving life without parole sentences which the U.S. Supreme Court has said is unconstitutional, but not a single one of them has asked for a new sentence. One of those inmates is housed at a prison unit in Gatesville. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote a majority opinion by the court that said “under the Eighth Amendment's bar against cruel and unusual punishment, states may no longer sentence juveniles to life without parole.” “We have 12 in custody now serving life without parole sentences who were younger than 18 when they committed their crimes,” Jason Clark, public information director for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said in a telephone interview Thursday . “As far as I know none of them has asked for a new sentence and it’s something they have to do,” Clark said. As long ago as 2012 the high court ruled that a life without parole sentence handed to a person convicted...

UK politicians hold a tearful vigil for a clock because they clearly have nothing better to do

240 Shares Big Ben has been silenced. Image: Alberto Pezzali/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesNurPhoto via Getty Images By Rachel Thompson 2017-08-21 16:45:38 UTC Just in case you were in any doubt about the world falling apart, British politicians confirmed our worst fears today by holding a silent vigil for a bell. Big Ben, to be precise.  At midday on Monday, Big Ben sounded its final bong for four years. The iconic Elizabeth Tower , which houses Big Ben and the Great Clock, will be undergoing repairs and the bell must be stopped for the safety of the workers. The only thing is: the bell will still ring on special occasions. So, it's technically not going to be silent for the next four years. Nonetheless, a group of MPs with nothing better to do decided to hold a silent vigil. It's not like the country's in the midst of Brexit chaos. The vigil's ringleader Stephen Pound MP told the Telegraph the vigil intended to mark the passing of "something that you don't k...

The Defenders: Netflix Links, MCU Easter Eggs & Comic Book References

Image
What do a man without fear, an alcoholic P.I., a bulletproof ex-convict and a living weapon all have in common? The urge to defend, of course. That's right, guys. This event has literally been years in the making, but fans of Marvel's Netflix shows can finally watch Daredevil , Jessica Jones , Luke Cage and Iron Fist unite in the first season of The Defenders. While you're all casually watching the biggest TV event of the year, we mustered up zen levels of concentration to unpick every # Marvel easter egg , comic book reference and link with the #MCU to be found in The Defenders . Join us as we break down all eight episodes of Season 1 in microscopic detail. Episode 1 — 'The H Word' — While the title obviously refers to the word 'hero', something which The Defenders themselves are keen to avoid, The H Word also happens to be the title of a book by author Perry Anderson which explores the political theory of hegemony (leadership). We doubt it's a coi...
