Leaders mull ways to improve parking in downtown Auburn | Auburn

Downtown Merchants Association coordinator Jessica Kohn said one resounding issue is brought up at each monthly meeting of downtown Auburn business owners . “A huge hurdle is employees not having designated parking spaces for them,” Kohn said. “Unless business owners lease parking spaces , that’s really the only way they’re guaranteed a space. Certain business owners tell their employees to catch a ride or walk.” On average, 125 employees work at businesses downtown each day, she added. Not having them park their personal vehicles downtown frees parking spaces for customers. Yet the rallying cry from people who work, shop and eat in Auburn is that there is simply not enough parking space available to everyone. “In all the parking studies we’ve done, we’ve always been told that what Auburn needs is not one huge deck with 1,000 cars or 2,000 cars. As summer comes to a close and the kids go back to school, there seems to be a whole lot of movin’ going on. Marguerite Vann teachers moved back into a renovated building this past week while other school personnel were moving to new positions or even new schools. Teachers were moving in new supplies and displays to assist them in teaching their new classes. And those yellow school buses will be moving again tomorrow, some over newly paved highways and roads. The Salem Road extension from Exit 124 to Highway 25 at Lake Beaverfork opened last week and frequent travelers are loving it. Stoby’s had a soft opening to raise funds for Haven House yesterday but if all goes well, the restaurant will be opening on Wednesday. Two of the most anticipated improvements for the new restaurant are more seating and restrooms that aren’t located in the kitchen.
