Do you remember the first friend you made? The first person I consciously remember calling my “friend” (and later, “best friend”) was someone I met in preschool. I was probably four years old. We had similar interests, and complementary personalities (he was the big picture idea guy , I was the detail-oriented do-er). As I’ve continued through life, my friendships have shifted . I’ve made new friends along the way, deepened my relationship with existing friend s, and fallen out of touch with others. When you look at it this way, it seems like friendship is something that just “happens. ” You can’t control it, it would seem, and maybe it’s better not to. After all, you can’t force friendship. The school with its agricultural heritage had little appeal for the bookish Franklin. “I used to hate when daddy grew a garden and I had to go out and help with it,” Franklin said. Initially founded in 1971 as Tyler State College , the University of Texas at Tyler has undergone many transformations throughout its history. In 1975, the school was renamed Texas Eastern University before joining the University of Texas System four years later. When Amy Franklin, 30, bought her one-bedroom condominium in Arlington County’s Colonial Village seven years ago, she found the neighborhood’s pretty 1930s buildings and graceful expanses of lawn pleasingly familiar . “I was 23, just out of college, and it felt like a college campus,” she says. VALDOSTA, Ga. — For decades, a widely-circulated “brothel law” related to sorority housing at colleges and universities across the nation caused students , staff, and surrounding community residents to believe sororities were unable to have designated houses. Since debunked, the “law” supposedly stated if more than four unrelated women lived in a house together, it was deemed a “brothel” and made illegal. At one Georgia university , however, the persisting fallacy has been put to rest. As it turns out, it is a common belief among some Valdosta students and residents that has no historical standing, according to area officials. “Obviously we had residence halls on college campuses that were only same-sex years ago,” Dr. Vince Miller, Valdosta State University vice president of student affairs, said. Downtown Merchants Association coordinator Jessica Kohn said one resounding issue is brought up at each monthly meeting of downtown Auburn business owners . “A huge hurdle is employees not having designated parking spaces for them,” Kohn said. “Unless business owners lease parking spaces , that’s really the only way they’re guaranteed a space. Certain business owners tell their employees to catch a ride or walk.” On average, 125 employees work at businesses downtown each day, she added. Not having them park their personal vehicles downtown frees parking spaces for customers.
