Leaders mull ways to improve parking in downtown Auburn | Auburn

Downtown Merchants Association coordinator Jessica Kohn said one resounding issue is brought up at each monthly meeting of downtown Auburn business owners . “A huge hurdle is employees not having designated parking spaces for them,” Kohn said. “Unless business owners lease parking spaces , that’s really the only way they’re guaranteed a space. Certain business owners tell their employees to catch a ride or walk.” On average, 125 employees work at businesses downtown each day, she added. Not having them park their personal vehicles downtown frees parking spaces for customers. Yet the rallying cry from people who work, shop and eat in Auburn is that there is simply not enough parking space available to everyone. “In all the parking studies we’ve done, we’ve always been told that what Auburn needs is not one huge deck with 1,000 cars or 2,000 cars. It’s several little spaces,” interim city manager Jim Buston said. “Because our town is not that big; our town is smal...

Napa Valley resort owners plan 170-room development

The owners of the Indian Springs Resort and Spa in Calistoga are in talks with the city for a 170 unit resort, the third resort planned for the city in recent years. In July, the Merchant family submitted a formal application for The Veranda Hotel project , a luxury resort located downtown , adjacent to Indian Springs , at 1512 Lincoln Ave. The project involves the construction of up to 170 guest units, restaurants, meeting rooms, a spa, a 4,464- square foot event building , swimming pools, 22 apartments, and a public laundromat. The application for the project states the development concept is to take advantage of the picturesque down valley views and predominance of Lincoln Avenue. The principal structure would create a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere along the street with restaurants, shops and sitting areas. In December, the Merchants purchased the historic Calistoga Depot , which flanks the other end of the property. Also in December, the family purchased the property across the ...

Waterford Lakes, Avalon Park sitting pretty with retail, schools, roads

Image
Waterford Lakes is a suburban, family-centric haven that’s probably best known for the Waterford Lakes Town Center , a formidable shopping center that spans both sides of State Road 434 , known locally as the Alafaya Trail. Proximity to the University of Central Florida and Florida State Road 408 are also prime motivators for those considering a move to this east Orlando community . Waterford Lakes is a neighborhood, not a city; homes here have an Orlando address . Waterford Lakes residents want for very little in the way of major shopping and dining — huge big-box merchants (Old Navy, Super Target, Best Buy, etc.) are prevalent, along with popular restaurant chains , a massive Regal theater , and smaller but equally well known retailers. Despite a preponderance of big names, independent shops and cafes do proliferate, though you’ll need to search them out. Most blend into the architecture, most of which is new and attractive, but largely strip-mall/shopping center-style. Near th...
