Newborn Baby Found Near Houston Apartment Was One-Hour Old, Covered With Ants

HOUSTON, TX — More news has surfaced on the baby found abandoned in an NW Harris County apartment Thursday morning . According to authorities, the baby was less than an hour old, full-term and healthy, covered with ants and still had its umbilical cord attached . Two men on their way to work early Thursday morning found the baby around 5 a.m. in the grass on the grounds of the apartment complex off of Red Oak Drive. Investigators have tracked down the woman they feel is the biological mother. There was an emergency custody hearing Friday morning , and the man who claims to be the father testified that the mother constantly denied being pregnant, although he believed she was. A DNA test is being performed to see if the man matches the baby's DNA. According to the report on KTRK Houston, the child's umbilical cord had been ripped rather than cut, and that the infant has a bacterial infection and rapid heart rate . Detectives said that if the two people hadn't found the b...

Could a checkbox at Maricopa County jails avert hundreds of arrests?

(Photo: Loren Townsley/The Republic) A tiny change in paperwork and a big shift in mindset at  Maricopa County 's jails could help dozens of homeless people get off the street, eliminate hundreds of arrests and save taxpayers money . Last month, homeless inmates began meeting with caseworkers in jail to connect them to apartments, medical care and jobs immediately upon release in an effort to keep them from coming back.  The jail system has never before partnered so closely with public-housing, health-care and human- services agencies to address homelessness and prevent recidivism, agency partners say.  "We knew we had to start looking more deeply at this relatively small number of people who are homeless and somehow not getting access to services," said Margaret Kilman,  Homelessness Projects program manager for the Maricopa County Human Services Department . "Con...

Mother of abandoned newborn girl charged with child neglect

Image
The only remains of the birth of "Baby Willow" were washed away from an apartment complex parking lot Tuesday morning as distraught neighbors looked on. A day earlier Orlando police responded around 3 p.m. to Willow Bend Apartments after someone reported seeing a possible placenta in the parking lot. Homicide and crime- scene investigators determined "that a full term baby had been born and discarded," police said. Officers found the mother, 30-year-old Susan Richardson, on Monday but no baby. She only admitted to giving birth to the girl, according to police. Richardson was taken to the Orange County Jail on an aggravated child neglect charge Tuesday afternoon , police say. Police conducted an extensive search of the complex in the 4700 block of Silver Star Road near Evans High School — including inside Dumpsters and trash cans — with cadaver dogs and 14 trained searchers from the nonprofit support group Search and Rescue of Central Florida but came up emp...

French police say arrest unrelated to attack

BARCELONA, Spain The Latest on the Spain attacks (all times local): 11:30 p.m. Police in the southern French city of Nimes have arrested a man unlawfully carrying a pistol into a train station, but say he is not linked to the attacks in Barcelona. After an evacuation and police operation at the train station Saturday night , the historic city quickly returned to normal, with police returning to their posts. A national police spokesman said the operation began when a passenger alerted police to a man with a weapon. Police quickly found and arrested him, said the spokesman, who was not authorized to be publicly named. The spokesman said the man has no apparent connection to Thursday's attacks around Barcelona, about 380 kilometers southwest of Nimes. French authorities increased checks of its border with Spain after the attacks, and one suspect is believed at large. 10:50 p.m. Catalan regional police say they are mounting major road blocks throughout the northeastern regio...

Waterford Lakes, Avalon Park sitting pretty with retail, schools, roads

Image
Waterford Lakes is a suburban, family-centric haven that’s probably best known for the Waterford Lakes Town Center , a formidable shopping center that spans both sides of State Road 434 , known locally as the Alafaya Trail. Proximity to the University of Central Florida and Florida State Road 408 are also prime motivators for those considering a move to this east Orlando community . Waterford Lakes is a neighborhood, not a city; homes here have an Orlando address . Waterford Lakes residents want for very little in the way of major shopping and dining — huge big-box merchants (Old Navy, Super Target, Best Buy, etc.) are prevalent, along with popular restaurant chains , a massive Regal theater , and smaller but equally well known retailers. Despite a preponderance of big names, independent shops and cafes do proliferate, though you’ll need to search them out. Most blend into the architecture, most of which is new and attractive, but largely strip-mall/shopping center-style. Near th...

BARCELONA, Spain — The Latest on the Spain attacks (all times local): 5:40 p.m. A police official in Spain says an imam whose home was searched as part of the investigation into two deadly vehicle attacks is believed to be the radicalizing force behind the cell of young men — and is now thought to have died in an explosion linked to the attacks. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to reveal details of the new suspicions surrounding imam Abdelbaki Es Satty . Officials in Es Satty’s former mosque in the northern town of Ripoll, which he left abruptly in June, on Saturday denounced the attacks in Barcelona and a nearby seaside town . The mosque president , Ali Yassine, said Es Satty told him he wanted to return to Morocco for three months and hasn’t seen him since. The police official says Es Satty is believed to have died in an explosion Wednesday that destroyed a house south of Barcelona. The day after an attack killed 13 people in Las Ramblas in Barcelona, locals try ...

How to Make it to $1 Million

Image
The balance of our coverage provides a snapshot of who America's millionaires are, where they live, and how they built their wealth. Nearly two decades ago, these five families were featured in MONEY as "millionaires in the making"—households that were well on their way to a seven- figure net worth excluding the value of their primary residences. Rhone in MONEY’s August 2000 issue, when he was still a “Millionaire In The Making.”   That was starting in 2000, around the time the dotcom stock bubble began to burst. Yet despite running into one of the worst bear markets in history—which was followed soon after by the global financial panic , the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression—these families still managed to achieve their goals. How did they accomplish this? Some did it by living frugally and saving aggressively so that when the bad times hit, they had enough of a cushion. Others proved to be resilient in the face of setbacks, staying the course with the...
