Ben Davis HS student Rondell Allen 'in good spirits' after shooting

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Ben Davis High School football player who was hit in a drive-by shooting last month is recovering, but still has a lot to overcome, according to his aunt. Jamilah Mintze says her nephew, 18-year-old Rondell Allen, is improving since he was shot July 31 at the Heather Ridge Apartments . Allen, a standout football star at Ben Davis, was struck in the chest by a bullet as an unknown gunman opened fire from another vehicle at the entrance to the complex. PREVIOUS | Ben Davis High School football standout shot in drive-by Two other passengers in the car, both 16-year-olds, were not injured. Mintze said Allen’s mother has remained by her son’s side 24/7. “I was just there on Friday with him and his mother and he is in good spirits and has his favorite thing, a football, right next to him, along with watching ESPN to catch up on his favorite sport,” Mintze said. Mintze said the family is asking for privacy as police still have not identified any suspects in Allen’s sh...

The eclipse capital of the U.S. is over the moon for Monday’s solar event

Image
The first coast-to- coast solar eclipse in almost 100 years moved across the U.S. at 2,000 mph on Aug. 21. Here are some highlights. (Erin Patrick O'Connor/The Washington Post) CARBONDALE, Ill. — At first, Bob Baer thought it had to be a hoax. A man identifying himself as an astronomer had emailed to let him know about two eclipses that would cross the United States — one in 2017, the next in 2024. Carbondale, the small southern Illinois city where Baer was a physics professor, would be the only city at the center of both. Disbelieving, Baer pulled up a NASA projection of future paths of totality — the places where the moon completely covers the sun during an eclipse. The lines crossed right over his city, like an X on a treasure map, marked by the shadow of the moon. Three years later, Carbondale residents are still incredulous at their cosmic good fortune . The city has been badly in need of a break, ever since the recession and state budget crises cut enrollment at the ...

RA: Madteo: Voracious culturilizer

Image
Matteo Ruzzon, the DJ and producer better known as Madteo, was inside the Goodwill in Queens for about 60 seconds. He pushed through the glass doors and crossed the room in big, rolling strides, cocking his head to scan the blue bins that ran from one end to the other, each bearing different types of discarded consumer goods . "Nothin'," he said, meaning "no records," this being one of his favorite spots to dig. He briefly inspected a pile of DVDs then doubled back toward the door. "Honestly that's probably better, though. Otherwise we'd be here all day." Ruzzon stepped back into the heat, turned right and headed up Van Dam Street , adjusting his bulky messenger bag as he walked. "That place is on and off but it can be killer," he said. "It's worth going a few times without getting anything. I mean, it's not like you can get Basic Channel records . But then again, it's not like that's what I'm looking for. ...

After Fox, Megyn Kelly Aims To Be a Force for Good

Image
Megyn Kelly is excited about bonding with her fellow human beings . She’s so excited she’s bouncing in her chair, hands waving, as she talks about empowerment and laughter and tears. It’s a recent summer evening , and we’re in her living room on Manhattan’s Upper West Side —a simple space of modern furniture, earth tones, and bookshelves (mostly hardcover novels, DeMille to Franzen). The apartment is quiet, uncharacteristically so, as her husband, the tech CEO turned novelist Douglas Brunt , and their children—sons Yates and Thatcher, eight and four, and six-year-old daughter Yardley—are all at the beach. Kelly, barefoot in a loose cream-colored sweater and black leggings, is telling me about her new perch at NBC and the morning show, Megyn Kelly Today , that’s set to debut later this month. Not that she can get into specifics. Occupying what used to be the 9:00 a.m. hour of the Today show, her new venture, she says, will have a live studio audience and guests of various sorts. It w...
