Disneyland Gets Approval to Add Over 400 Parking Spaces to its Toy Story Lot

Image
In preparation for large crowds visiting “Star Wars” land opening in 2019, Disneyland Resort is adding more parking spaces to its “Toy Story” off- site parking lot . Disneyland got approval from the Anaheim Planning Commission to add 455 parking spaces to its Toy Story lot off Harbor Boulevard and Convention Way. This will increase the lot to 5, 378 parking spaces . Disneyland will replace 6- foot walls separating the parking area from nearby apartment complexes with a 16-foot-tall, sound wall made of masonry blocks and will landscape with rows of Canary Island Pine trees . Disney plans to add new lighting for the parking lot and a ramp that would connect to its tram depot. The additional parking spaces are desperately needed in the Disneyland Resort area . During peak season guests unable to get into Disney’s 10,000-spot Mickey and Friends parking structure or the Toy Story lot find themselves with limited options around Disneyland. On rare occasions, the employee parking l...

Leaders mull ways to improve parking in downtown Auburn | Auburn

Downtown Merchants Association coordinator Jessica Kohn said one resounding issue is brought up at each monthly meeting of downtown Auburn business owners . “A huge hurdle is employees not having designated parking spaces for them,” Kohn said. “Unless business owners lease parking spaces , that’s really the only way they’re guaranteed a space. Certain business owners tell their employees to catch a ride or walk.” On average, 125 employees work at businesses downtown each day, she added. Not having them park their personal vehicles downtown frees parking spaces for customers. Yet the rallying cry from people who work, shop and eat in Auburn is that there is simply not enough parking space available to everyone. “In all the parking studies we’ve done, we’ve always been told that what Auburn needs is not one huge deck with 1,000 cars or 2,000 cars. It’s several little spaces,” interim city manager Jim Buston said. “Because our town is not that big; our town is smal...

Freedom on four wheels: Van life on the rise in Boulder County

Image
'Your home is wherever you stop and that's what's really, really cool about that whole idea' Rain patters on the roof of John Salhany's 2006 Mercedes Sprinter van as he points out the half-finished ceiling of tongue-and- groove pine paneling that will eventually continue down the walls over layers of plywood and reflective insulation. Items strewn in the hollowed back include a dusty climbing rope , a road bike and a six-pack of Upslope Brewing Company 's Citra Pale Ale . All his essentials will soon have their places once the van build-out is complete, when Salhany will have a bed big enough to accommodate all 6 feet, 2 inches of him, a countertop with a sink and drawers, and maybe even a backsplash with the cutout of the mountains — amenities like that of a house. "I have a lot of friends who are buying houses right now who are just getting to that age, all on the East Coast and I'm just like, how do you guys know where you want to live?" said...

Developer seeks zoning change for Westbury apartment hotel project

The developer of a proposed 195-unit apartment-hotel complex at the former Roosevelt Raceway in Westbury is seeking Town of Hempstead approval to change the zoning from industrial to cluster residential housing . The potential zoning change would make way for the estimated $25 million development -- The Portofino -- near Zeckendorf Boulevard and Corporate Drive. The development, spearheaded by the Beechwood Organization , a residential developer based in Jericho, would be designed to attract young people . Most Popular "It employs a lot of principles of smart growth," Beechwood principal Michael Dubb said about the proposed development near Roosevelt Field mall . "It is a walkable community. You can walk to the supermarket, the restaurants and the movies." The town board plans to hold hearings on the proposal Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the pavilion adjacent to Hempstead Town Hall . The proposed six- floor apartment hotel would sit on 5 1/2 acres and compris...

Zionsville murder victim had dangerous Indianapolis past | CBS 4 - Indianapolis News, Weather, Traffic and Sports

× Zionsville murder victim had dangerous Indianapolis past ZIONSVILLE, Ind. – The sound of nearly 30 gunshots woke up neighbors at the Quail Run Apartments in Zionsville last week when an Indianapolis man was cut down in the parking lot before dawn. Terrell Scott had been staying far away from home in the apartment of his girlfriend’s sister for a week or two when his killer or killers tracked him down. “We were certainly able to gather evidence in the form of shell casings and we’ve seized the vehicle that he was getting into. It had bullet holes in it,” said Zionsville Police Chief Rob Knox . Neighbors didn’t see the shooting but looked out their windows quickly enough to spot a white Chevrolet Impala or Malibu and a silver or white Honda Accord speeding away. Scott wasn’t armed and didn’t have a chance to defend himself, unlike a day last September when two men tried to rob him at an east side drug house . On Monday, September 12, a relative dropped off Mack Taylor and his frien...

Lessons from the storm: Effects of extreme weather linger more among children and older adults

Ruth Bennett woke up at 1 a.m. and looked through the doorway of her independent living apartment in Walker, about 20 miles west of Baton Rouge. It was Aug. 13, 2016, and rain had been pouring down for two days. Bennett was worried about her car flooding. She saw water creeping up to the parking lot, but her  car looked safe . She crawled back into bed.  Two hours later, one of the employees of Southern Pines Retirement Community  was pounding on Bennett's door. Not only had Bennett's car flooded, the facility was surrounded by water. The employee told Bennet to grab what she needed, including her medicine. "In two hours it had come from nothing," Bennett recalled recently . "It was very frightening, especially when you're old." The elderly and children are among the most vulnerable populations to extreme weather events . That's in part because they often do not have the ability to mobilize quickly or on their own, and they're at a greater risk...

Olympia to revise codes to allow for a variety of housing

Whitney and Luke Bowerman dream of building cottages on one of the few larger lots remaining in Olympia’s Eastside neighborhood. They want to leave the existing trees on the Fairview Street Southeast lot , and reflect the character of the neighborhood in their design. The cottages would join a new, three-bedroom house also designed to fit the area. But the city of Olympia has made it expensive to build cottages, the Bowermans said. They estimate that city fees alone will run $30,000 to $40,000 per cottage. And the cottages will be just between 500 and 800 square feet. “The impact fees for a 500-square-foot cottage are almost the same as for a single-family home,” Whitney Bowerman said. “But you can’t rent them for as much,” Luke Bowerman said. If changes aren’t made to reduce the costs, the Bowermans said, they might have to abandon the cottage idea and build a more traditional subdivision. Out of respect for the neighborhood, they don’t want to do that. Meanwhile, Olympia is poised...

Have global tastes but want a hometown feel? Consider Lincoln Square living

Image
A block north of the Western Brown Line stop , you'll find a family-friendly collision of worlds. Time and continents get confused at the crossroads where Lincoln Avenue runs into the intersection of Lawrence and Western avenues . Staring down the street bearing his name, a statue of Abraham Lincoln — perched on a podium and holding his stovepipe hat — watches over the juncture. Honest Abe seems a fitting guardian of the spot that is at once multicultural and wholly American. Once you pass under the arching entryway onto Lincoln Square , restaurants with Argentine, Greek, German, Mexican, Dutch and New Orleans fare are all within a stone's throw. Some take you back in time and some feel like home. Locals say the corridor is family-forward with a European touch. It's not hard to see. On a recent Friday evening , families congregated in the plaza. Children straight off Gap runways devoured frozen yogurt and painted patios in chalk while fluffy dogs sniffed out pigeons. Old...
