A new study maintains that two-thirds of Denver renters plan to move to another city, a figure higher than the national average, with most listing high rent costs in the Mile High City  as the main reason. At the same time, however, so many people from other places want to move here that the actual number of renters in Denver is likely to remain steady in the near future and could actually rise. These are among the findings in a provocative report from Apartment List. That's the day all furry shelter occupants at the Aggieland Humane Society and the Bryan Animal Center will be free to adopt as part of a nationwide event known as Clear the Shelters. Developers of an upcoming Gilbert multifamily project say it will be the first apartment community to offer remote, mobile- device enabled technology to residents, making the apartments “smart homes.” Cisterra LLC is developing Vistara at SanTan Village, which will offer remote control locks , temperature and lighting to its residents who will be able to control these home features with a smart phone. WASHINGTON — The Commerce Department said Wednesday that housing starts fell 4 .8 percent in July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.16 million. Groundbreakings for multi- family buildings such as apartments slumped 17.1 percent, while single- family house construction slipped 0 .5 percent. Home construction has increased 2.4 percent year-to-date, but the gains have done little to offset the dwindling number of homes listed for sale. The shortage of properties for sale has pushed prices up at a faster pace than income growth, making home ownership less affordable for many would-be buyers. Housing starts dropped in the Northeast, Midwest and West but rose modestly in the South. Building permits, an indicator of future construction, decreased 4.1 percent to 1.22 million. PHOENIX - A new study this week from Apartment List states that roughly 68 percent of Phoenix renters were leaving for another state. The analysis was completed by their annual renter survey . Researchers said they surveyed 24,000 renters. They asked them, "Do you plan on settling down in another city," and "If you plan on settling in another city, what's your biggest reason for leaving your current city?" Overall, renters in our state -- along with Texas and Florida -- were still more likely to settle in Arizona. Despite that 68 percent statistic of renters leaving, research associate Sydney Bennet said the demand for our state is still high.  "Although some renters want to leave Phoenix, it was still kind of a desirable location for renters in other cities," Bennet explained .
