After Fox, Megyn Kelly Aims To Be a Force for Good

Image
Megyn Kelly is excited about bonding with her fellow human beings . She’s so excited she’s bouncing in her chair, hands waving, as she talks about empowerment and laughter and tears. It’s a recent summer evening , and we’re in her living room on Manhattan’s Upper West Side —a simple space of modern furniture, earth tones, and bookshelves (mostly hardcover novels, DeMille to Franzen). The apartment is quiet, uncharacteristically so, as her husband, the tech CEO turned novelist Douglas Brunt , and their children—sons Yates and Thatcher, eight and four, and six-year-old daughter Yardley—are all at the beach. Kelly, barefoot in a loose cream-colored sweater and black leggings, is telling me about her new perch at NBC and the morning show, Megyn Kelly Today , that’s set to debut later this month. Not that she can get into specifics. Occupying what used to be the 9:00 a.m. hour of the Today show, her new venture, she says, will have a live studio audience and guests of various sorts. It w...

RA: Madteo: Voracious culturilizer

Image
Matteo Ruzzon, the DJ and producer better known as Madteo, was inside the Goodwill in Queens for about 60 seconds. He pushed through the glass doors and crossed the room in big, rolling strides, cocking his head to scan the blue bins that ran from one end to the other, each bearing different types of discarded consumer goods . "Nothin'," he said, meaning "no records," this being one of his favorite spots to dig. He briefly inspected a pile of DVDs then doubled back toward the door. "Honestly that's probably better, though. Otherwise we'd be here all day." Ruzzon stepped back into the heat, turned right and headed up Van Dam Street , adjusting his bulky messenger bag as he walked. "That place is on and off but it can be killer," he said. "It's worth going a few times without getting anything. I mean, it's not like you can get Basic Channel records . But then again, it's not like that's what I'm looking for. ...

Screenwriting Wisdom from the Oscar-Nominated Taylor Sheridan

Image
The story of Taylor Sheridan — the Oscar-nominated screenwriter behind Sicario , Hell or High Water , and Wind River — is an inspiring one, especially for those screenwriters that are getting somewhat long in the tooth as they continue the struggle to break through.   Sheridan wrote his very first script when he was 40 years old. Sicario , written on spec, was then put into a drawer to write what he felt would be an easier script to sell. That script was the Oscar-nominated Hell or High Water .  Formerly known as Comancheria , this spec would be Sheridan’s first sale. It was also one of the 2012 Black List Scripts . The sale of Sicario soon followed and would then go on to be the first of the two to make it to the big screen. Both scripts — and their eventual film adaptations — would garner amazing critical and box office acclaim . His third script, Wind River , was then picked up with Sheridan attached as the director and has enjoyed much acclaim of its own. Not a bad start to a s...
