Space-Saving Baby Items for Small Houses, Apartments

Image
You’re expecting a baby…congrats! Whether this is your first or fourth bundle of joy, one thing is true—you need certain items to survive the first year. Take a look at any registry list and you might become a bit overwhelmed by all the “musts”—cribs, strollers, pacifiers, diapers and car seats are just the tip of the iceberg. And if you happen to be an apartment-dweller, or live somewhere that is void of ample space, deciding which products you actually need is even trickier. Below we’ve rounded up 10 items you definitely want (nay, need!), all of which are smaller than typical and/or can be easily stored when not in use. Because when you’ve only got a few hundred square feet of space to live in, you don’t want to be swallowed up by all that baby gear. THE CRIB You may have always dreamed of lying your sweet baby to bed in a sleigh crib, but a teensy nursery—or no nursery at all—likely rules that dream out. What to do? Well, first, don’t scrimp on quality. Just because you need a sma...

Back-to-school: The hopes, fears, excitement of the WFAA family

Image
With the beginning of a new school year, WFAA team members share their personal hopes, fears and excitement.   Anchor Cynthia Izaguirre A Milestone Moment   (Photo: Cynthia Izaguirre ) It's a milestone moment. In a couple of weeks, my 5-year-old twins will start kindergarten and be in a class setting for the first time in their lives. They were never in daycare or pre-K. Since I work the night shift, that would've meant not seeing them in the mornings. My husband and I have enjoyed teaching them a few things daily before I go to work, including Spanish, their ABCs and numbers. They can also recite for you the acceleration of gravity thanks to their architect dad. But, alas, it's time to turn them over to the real pros. People keep asking me how I feel. Before I answer, let me rewind a bit. The last couple of years have been hard grappling with this moment. Here's why. I work night side . When they get off school, mommy will already be at work. I'll only see them...

Twin Oaks Residents and NoDa Neighbors Organize Against Displacement | News Feature

Image
Late on a humid Sunday afternoon , July 30, at Twin Oaks apartments on East 36th Street , about a dozen residents mingle under a large oak tree . Some sit on stoops, others pace. Some sit quietly, others discuss the conundrum they've found themselves in through no fault of their own. "I just don't know what I'm supposed to do," one woman stammers between sobs. The residents are young, old and in between. Some have lived here for nearly a decade, some moved in this year. One thing all of the neighbors share in common: they don't know where they'll be living on September 17. Each resident living in the 18 remaining units in the complex — two other units were heavily damaged by fire in February — received a letter on July 13 stating the company they were leasing from, Beatty Investment Homes LLC (BIH), had sold the property and would be knocking it down. Local development firm The Drakeford Company (TDC) and builders Shea Homes plan to build more than 30...

Confessions of Celebrity Assistants: What It's Really Like to Work for Hollywood's Rich and Famous

The first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club .  I'm sitting in the lobby of the Players Club, in Manhattan's Gramercy Park, waiting to meet my interview subject. She is a longtime celebrity assistant , a profession that is both hard to find and incredibly difficult to convince to talk to you about. I'm in the lobby because in order to walk past the entrance of the Players Club you have to be escorted by a member, and I'm waiting because her principal, which I will later learn is a fancy word that celebrity assistants use to describe their bosses, landed after a long flight with a laundry list of things he needed to talk about immediately.  It's during this time that my mind starts to wander to that classic and brutal  Brad Pitt movie.  The Players Club reminds me of Fight Club, if Fight Club took place in a Gothic revival mansion facing the only Manhattan park so exclusive that one needs a key to enter. And replace the barren cement walks with...
