2 bills aimed at safer construction in New Jersey after devastating Edgewater apartment fire

EDGEWATER, New Jersey (WABC) -- Following a devastating apartment complex fire in Edgewater more than two years ago, New Jersey lawmakers are working to make future construction safer . Two bills have been introduced in the New Jersey State Assembly that are aimed at improving fire safety and building construction codes . The proposed legislation would increase sprinklers in concealed combustible spaces and limit the use of lightweight wood construction . "Without this, as you saw here in Edgewater, there is no chance," Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco said. "So that's why it's so important to get this legislation moving quickly ." The January 2005 fire left hundreds of people at the Avalon apartment complex homeless . Officials said the fire spread so quickly and was virtually unstoppable because the building was made of lightweight materials with no firewalls. How McGregor Can Topple Mayweather This Weekend

Image
The city of Las Vegas is infamous for its ability to constantly beguile visitors into altering their perceptions - and, at times, their common sense - in a haze of hedonistic pleasures. And, the upcoming showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, with its unabashed glorification of money, image and bravado, fits perfectly within the daily excesses of the world's gambling capital. Saturday's mega event will pit a man widely considered one of the greatest exponents of his sport against a mixed martial artist who has never boxed professionally. While Mayweather's 49- 0 professional record speaks for itself and undoubtedly gives him a major advantage, McGregor's mantra and hubristic claims surely make us all believe that he is ready to shock the world. Though the odds are stacked perfectly in favour of Mayweather, many believe that McGregor's sleight of hand against an ageing boxing legend could provide a major upset. It will be no illusion if he does w...

Swing vote could decide future of Crestwood Ridge Apartments

Cedar Rapids residents continue fight against affordable housing project as City Council prepares to make decision May 18, 2017 at 5:40 pm | Print View CEDAR RAPIDS — Neighbors to a proposed affordable housing complex in the northwest quadrant say they are frustrated with unresponsive elected officials as the project that months ago appeared dead now appears primed to pass. CommonBond Communities, a St. Paul, Minnesota- based nonprofit affordable housing developer , wants to build the $9 million, 45- unit Crestwood Ridge Apartments at 1200 Edgewood Road NW . Neighbors have fought back but been painted as biased, city leaders won ’t give them a fair chance and an east-west divide is fueling opinions, said Boyd Severson, 65, who has been part of a core group of opposition. “People are aligning as east side versus west side , at least that is the appearance,” said Severson, who is among 769 people who have signed a petition against rezoning to allow the development. “People say our...

RA: Madteo: Voracious culturilizer

Image
Matteo Ruzzon, the DJ and producer better known as Madteo, was inside the Goodwill in Queens for about 60 seconds. He pushed through the glass doors and crossed the room in big, rolling strides, cocking his head to scan the blue bins that ran from one end to the other, each bearing different types of discarded consumer goods . "Nothin'," he said, meaning "no records," this being one of his favorite spots to dig. He briefly inspected a pile of DVDs then doubled back toward the door. "Honestly that's probably better, though. Otherwise we'd be here all day." Ruzzon stepped back into the heat, turned right and headed up Van Dam Street , adjusting his bulky messenger bag as he walked. "That place is on and off but it can be killer," he said. "It's worth going a few times without getting anything. I mean, it's not like you can get Basic Channel records . But then again, it's not like that's what I'm looking for. ...

Glossing Africa | by Namwali Serpell | NYR Daily

Ferdinando Scianna/Magnum Photos Côte d’Ivoire, 1972 Whenever African writers are on a panel together, we are asked about the continent as a whole—its literature, its future, its political woes and economic potential. Whenever African writers get together on our own, we talk about glossaries. These additions to the main text, often vetted, if not entirely decided, by publishers, are crucial to how it will be received by readers. But when African writers talk about glossaries, we don’t just exchange tips. (How long? How comprehensive? By whom?) We talk about whether to include one at all, whether to offer glosses within the text or omit all glossing entirely. To gloss, or not to gloss? That is the question. Most of us reading in the postcolonies never received glosses for the strange foods and weather of Europe. We had to figure out what snow and crumpets were on our own. When Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart was published in 1958, his British publisher Heinnemann included a bilin...

User Interfaces for Variable Fonts

Image
The tools we design with have a unique effect on the way we work, constraining and empowering us while we explore, examine and create. Variable fonts give us a new, wide open typographic space with which to work. Instead of prescribing value to individual UI elements in a vacuum, we should take a hybrid and calculated approach to variable font interfaces . How do we structure our design tools to adapt to the new advantages variable fonts provide us with? Article Continues Below 3 comments Despite being ahead of their time, variable font precursors—Multiple Master and GX—didn’t see widespread adoption for several reasons—one key reason being the lack of effective user interfaces that could communicate their creative utility to designers. Since their introduction, variable fonts have moved forward quickly , landing with various degrees of experimental support across major browsers. With this comes the exciting ability for fonts to responsively adapt to different layouts and contex...
