Is NYC going through an affordable housing crisis ? To get a better understanding of the city’s rental market, RentHop compared median rents for a two-bedroom apartment in various parts of the city to the most recent median income data available at the neighborhood level. It turns out that just nine out of the 139 neighborhoods included in the study had median asking rents that could be afforded with 35 percent of the neighborhood’s median income. RentHop added an additional 5 percent to the recommended affordability of 30 percent to make room for the income growth that has taken place since the Census data was released. In a neighborhood with many older buildings that lack even in-building laundry, this prompted an question extra in rent do you have to pay to have laundry (whether in-unit or in-building) at your Castro apartment ? To find out, we analyzed data from rental listings website Zumper , examining all studio and one-bedroom apartments for rent in the neighborhood. Our data found that the median rental price for a studio or one-bedroom in the Castro is $3,300, but the median for those with laundry is $3,450—a difference of $150 per month, or 4.55 percent. Most of Canada's rental markets have seen substantial rate hikes over the past year, with Toronto and Vancouver prices for one-bedroom units now heading for the $2,000 mark. And it's becoming decidedly difficult to rent an apartment in most major Canadian cities (and some minor ones) for under $1,000. For the first time ever, Padmapper's monthly survey of rental rates found that the median price for a one- bedroom apartment topped $1,000 in Canada's 10 priciest cities. Real estate site Zumper looked at the median rent on a one-bedroom apartment across 27 Bay Area cities and found that almost nowhere in the nine counties can renters expect to rent a home for less than the California median price . This is hardly a surprise in San Francisco, where Zumper users can expect to shell out $3,420/month for a modest home, still the highest nationwide (although that price is down from last month and the same time last year, for the record). But in all, only five cities in the survey managed to dip below the state average of $1,686/month. Finding a reasonably priced apartment in Toronto has never been more difficult. While there's been lots of chatter about the climbing costs of one and two bedroom units over the last year, it's actually the smallest apartments that are rising the most in price.  According to Padmapper's real-time rental stats, bachelor apartments have climbed a whopping 15 percent since last month to reach a median price of $1,499. I didn’t cry while searching for a San Diego apartment , but I came close. Moving to the city on a Sunday night, I had a five-day reservation at a Motel 6 and needed to find an apartment fast . Advocates for affordable housing in the St. Augustine area have learned they better be creative, resourceful and sometimes patient to make progress. The recent overhaul of the Southern Villas senior living complex is the perfect example of that. The set of 60 rental units just off State Road 207 near St. Augustine Health & Rehab has seen the results of $2.3 million worth of work that should keep it as a viable housing option for years to come. The residents, along with housing officials and politicians celebrated the work at a ceremony Thursday.
