Historic Fremont School to be renovated as upscale apartments - News - GoUpstate

Alyssa Mulliger Staff Writer @AMulligerSHJ An Albany, Ga.-based developer has plans to renovate the now- vacant Fremont School building near downtown Spartanburg to create 41 market-rate apartments. Pace Burt, the project’s developer, said the multimillion-dollar project will preserve the character and architectural integrity of the 102-year-old schoolhouse at 600 Magnolia St. while repurposing it for stylish apartments. “The project is going to be a historical renovation, so we will bring the building back to its original grandeur. There are beautiful columns and workmanship on the brick,” he said. “The apartments will be very upscale and have high ceilings, plenty of windows and original wooden floors .” The new apartments will consist of one- and two-bedroom units that will rent for around $850 and $1,000 per month, respectively, Burt said. The project includes onsite parking , landscaping and a fence that will make it a gated property. No n...

Walking tour of human sculpture photography project Stratford Living by artist and choreographer Willi Dorner

Image
A human sculpture photography project created by an internationally-renowned choreographer is coming to east London this weekend. Stratford Living , by Willi Dorner (bodies in urban spaces) and presented by East London Dance , has been created especially for Stratford. This is the first time Will’s eye- opening living room project has been mounted in the UK. Working with east London- based professional dancers , Willi has choreographed a series of human sculptures in a range of private homes and public spaces in both the historic and more recently developed quarters of Stratford. He hopes to offer a creative exploration of urbanisation and living environments in east London today . Willi says: “ Stratford Living subverts conventional views of the everyday lived environment by making public the arranged systems that define our private spaces . “We move within a strict framework of arranged systems and regulations. They are so every day that, over time, they become invisible t...

55 years in the making, Palma de la Reina takes flight

Image
Back in the 1960s, developer Richard Cavanaugh used to fly his airplane from Los Angeles over San Diego scouting potential properties . Flying over Rancho Santa Fe , he spotted the ideal open space , a farming area for sale along the San Dieguito River Valley . “I was looking for something for a golf course, as golf course developments were big at that time,” said Cavanaugh, who would soon get his company, Newport Pacific, in touch with a broker about the land he spied. “We put a deal together and proceeded with the design of it. The whole development was always called Whispering Palms …It only took 55 years to get everything I envisioned to happen.” The final piece of that Whispering Palms master plan drafted back in 1962 is finally in place with Palma de la Reina , a mixed-use retail, commercial and residential project on Cancha de Golf at the entrance to the Whispering Palms community of about 600 single-family homes and condominiums, and the Morgan Run Club & Resort. Council votes 6-1 to light alley for one year - The Northwoods River News

The Rhinelander City Council spent little time Monday paying a number of bills related to now- completed streetscape project , and approving a request from the golf course advisory committee to hire an outside consultant to evaluate Northwood Golf Course at a cost of $10,000, but the proposal with the lowest price tag - $230 to light the alley between 28 and 38 North Brown Street - prompted a long debate. Ultimately, the council voted to light the alley for one year, at a cost not to exceed $230, but the vote was not unanimous. The situation with the alley was previously discussed at the July 25 public safety committee meeting . Interim city administrator Keith Kost brought the idea forward after Downtown Rhinelander Inc. (DRI) previously suggested installing lighting in the alley because revelers from nearby bars frequently use it as a place to illegally relieve themselves. The project envisions a mural being painted on one of the walls, with the only cost to the city being...

ddemaree/ala_sass_examples: SCSS example code for A List Apart

README.md This project contains full source code examples for my article Getting Started with Sass in A List Apart #340, published November 29, 2011. What's in this project The examples/ directory contains both my Sassy CSS ( .scss ) style sheet source files and their compiled CSS. The files are named for the SCSS feature or concept they're intended to illustrate, and numbered in order of appearance in the article. A brief note about Sass output styles All of the style sheets in this project have been processed using Sass's "expanded" style. Sass supports three styles of CSS output, which roughly translate to different levels of readability and minification. The nested style (which is the default one used if you don't specify a style) balances readability and download size: every selector and property is on its own line, but there are no extra linebreaks between rules, or before or after closing curly braces . It also tries to represent nested properties ...

Revised plans for Lake Highlands’ Toscana apartment project

defunct Toscana apartments still stand at 6800 Skillman, but a new project is in the works." src="http://lakehighlands.advocatemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Screen-Shot-2013-05-29-at-1.28.15-PM.png" width="638" height="267" />The defunct Toscana apartments still stand at 6800 Skillman, but a new project is in the works. By all appearances, Prescott’s proposed changes for the Toscana project will be good for the neighborhood. The former Toscana apartment complex , located on the northeast corner of Skillman and Merriman Parkway, will soon be demolished to make way for a new residential multifamily development , which, according to Dallas Department of Development documents, will comprise three stories and 365 units. We already knew that the old Toscana apartments would be replaced with new ones — but originally the new build was going to include four stories and 665 units, which is way denser than what we are looking at now. In case you wer...

Monticello Hotel celebrates renovation efforts | Local

If R.A. Long were to step inside the Monticello Hotel today , he would find it looking much like it did when he was busy founding the city of Longview in 1923. The historic hotel , the first major building to rise in the new town, is nearing the end of a multimillion- dollar renovation . It is packed with turn-of-the-century antiques and old paintings. The ceiling plasterwork of its Crystal Ballroom, long covered by a drop ceiling, is fully restored, and the arched ceiling is again flanked by plaster columns. Mr. Long would find plenty of new features, too: a red-hued “speakeasy” with burgundy wood bar , crystal chandeliers, a stage for performers and dozens of newly-renovated apartments in the second and third floors. Ten months after purchasing the iconic property for $2.8 million, the new owners are celebrating the complete remodel of the Crystal Ballroom and progress in other areas of the hotel’s renovation with a Prohibition- era themed party Friday night . The sold-out party is e...

Woodside Village apartment project moving forward

The $ 79 million Woodside Village project , a redevelopment plan that will add hundreds of apartments and retail space to Westwood, is underway more than two years after receiving city approval for tax breaks. The project being built by Los Angeles-based Tanner & White is a big addition to Westwood, a small (pop. 1,500) inner-ring suburb in northeast Johnson County . Its City Council authorized up to $20 million in tax incentives to subsidize the project in late 2011. Developer Blair Tanner said it took a while to arrange the financing and coordinate the project with improvements made to the Woodside Health and Tennis Club, but work is beginning this week. The $26 million first phase calls for a four-story building with 91 luxury apartments on the upper floors and 20,000 square feet of retail space on the first level. It will be on the site of the former Youthfront building at 4715 Rainbow Blvd. Demolition of that structure is scheduled to begin in August. “We like the project ...

(Photo: Courtesy) LAS CRUCES - A new, 200- unit apartment complex is springing up on the city’s East Mesa and could be leasing the first units in about six months. Willow Springs Apartments will be located off of Bixler Avenue, north of US 70 and behind the now-closed Cattleman’s Steak House on Bataan Memorial West . The property is being developed by Dillon Mountain Enterprises , LLC. which is owned by Paul Curry and his son, Jared Curry. The Currys acquired the property in 2006 from a church which had plans to build on the site but opted to purchase a building in town instead. Construction on the 14.12-acre property will require the Currys to pave more than 1,000 feet of Bixler Avenue, one of the city’s oldest platted but undeveloped rights-of-way. The completion of Bixler will open up adjoining properties to development, Jared said. “We had the property for 11 years,” Jared said. “ Ten years ago our original t...

We offer our predictions on communities that will rank among the city's most desirable in 2026. Plus a look at developers who are working to make those visions a reality. February 18, 2016 (page 7 of 7) 8 developers with insight who are rethinking our urban neighborhoods   BY DEBRA SMIT G reat neighborhoods — with ample green space , commerce and good housing stock — empower their residents to grow and prosper. Developers are key when it comes to weaving together the physical threads of a community, particularly in urban neighborhoods frayed by years of blight and decay. These are among the developers who are working to revitalize some of the city’s most challenged neighborhoods, striving to be restorers of streets in which to dwell. All have one eye, certainly, on the bottom line. Still, they are well aware of expectations that they give measured consideration to quality of life in the neighborhoods in which they build.   Wi...
