OMAHA — A 40-year-old teaching hospital in Omaha is set to become a mammoth apartment building with up to 700 units, open-air atriums, a rooftop pool and an enclosed retail corridor that looks out to a new lake. NuStyle Development's plans to re-do CHI Creighton University Medical Center , adding a couple of floors, extending the midtown institution to 10 levels and 1 million square feet . The expansion would make the structure the metro-area's largest single building of market-rate apartments. NuStyle officials said the redevelopment plan will cost about $90 million. The surrounding area will include a pedestrian bridge connecting the area to the heart of the Creighton University campus , as well as trails linking to other nearby neighborhoods. GLENVILLE — Residents' ideas to improve the look and safety of Freeman's Bridge Road range from constructing a roundabout at its intersection with Route 50 to finding a way to remove the railroad crossing that splits the corridor in half. "You really need more lanes; you need sidewalks," said Jim Mastroianni, who owns the Glenville Sportsplex just south of the railroad crossing, during a planning workshop Wednesday at the Glenville Senior Center . Mastroianni has operated at the Freeman's Bridge Road location for nearly 25 years. "It's a lot busier than it was. A lot needs to change," he said. Mastroianni was among about 50 people who turned out for the workshop, which was part of the town's $50, 000 Complete Streets study of what can be done to improve the corridor. A focus is being placed on making the road more bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly. In preparation for large crowds visiting “Star Wars” land opening in 2019, Disneyland Resort is adding more parking spaces to its “Toy Story” off- site parking lot . Disneyland got approval from the Anaheim Planning Commission to add 455 parking spaces to its Toy Story lot off Harbor Boulevard and Convention Way. This will increase the lot to 5, 378 parking spaces . Disneyland will replace 6- foot walls separating the parking area from nearby apartment complexes with a 16-foot-tall, sound wall made of masonry blocks and will landscape with rows of Canary Island Pine trees . Disney plans to add new lighting for the parking lot and a ramp that would connect to its tram depot. The additional parking spaces are desperately needed in the Disneyland Resort area . But the flamboyant local construction magnate with a ZZ Top beard still acquired the Register’s Santa Ana real estate , currently vacant after the publication decamped to Anaheim this spring. With the Register gone, Harrah is now embarking on an ambitious $1-billion plan for the 20- acre Grand Avenue site , proposing to build Orange County ’s tallest buildings, more than 1,000 residences, a 171-room hotel, offices and retail shops.
