Philly rent comparison: What $1,100 rents right now

Welcome back to Curbed Comparisons, a dive into the options available for a certain price point in various Philly neighborhoods. Is one person’s townhouse another’s studio? Let’s find out! This week’s price point: $1,100 a month. Rittenhouse (1 bed, 1 bath) —Clocking in at 400 square feet, this Rittenhouse rental is no doubt the tiniest apartment on this list—there is no living room. But: Location! The recently renovated unit in a beautiful building is located right at 23rd and Spruce, which puts you near Rittenhouse Square and Schuylkill River Park . Powelton (2 beds, 1 bath) —This Powelton rental at 20 N. 40th Street sits above a pharmacy and offers the very basics, including shared laundry in the basement. The kitchen is tiny, but manageable, though its comes sans dishwasher. The good news is that it’s location puts you a block away from 40th Street Station on the El. Kensington (2 beds, 1 bath)— The listing says this cozy spot is in Fishtown, but it’s technically outside of the...

Joy Division open up about 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'

Image
Joy Division‘s, Bernard Sumner , Peter Hook and Stephen Morris have all spoken about the making of their classic ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’. The 1980 track was named as NME ‘s Greatest Track of the last 60 years earlier this week and the band’s remaining members have all spoken about the track and what it mean to them now and how it makes them remember their former frontman and friend Ian Curtis . Speaking about his memories of the track, Morris said: “I just thought ‘Yeah, this is a good song’, someone might like it. It was a great period for the band, but Ian’s personal life – that was all going badly. In retrospect, when you listen to it in light of what happened, it seems bloody obvious. I honestly didn’t realise that he was writing about himself. I just said ‘These are great lyrics, Ian’. That makes it a bit difficult to listen to now’.” Sumner also spoke about Curtis and added: “We thought his headspace was OK. But Ian had two faces – the public face for the band and the priva...

Carnegie winners: a list apart | Books

Seventy glorious years: which is your favourite Carnegie winner ? Photograph: Getty Images It may be the first poll of children's fiction favourites in recent years to feature neither hobbits nor boy wizards called Harry . To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Carnegie Medal, the public are being asked to choose their favourite Carnegie author - and the list of past winners is surprisingly idiosyncratic. No JRR Tolkien, no JK Rowling, no Michael Morpurgo nor Jacqueline Wilson. The Carnegie medal, which is awarded by a panel of children's librarians, has always gone its own way and this is never more evident than when faced with a complete list of the books honoured throughout its long and distinguished history. Of course, some classics of children's literature can be found - there's CS Lewis (with The Last Battle), Arthur Ransome (Pigeon Post) and Mary Norton (The Borrowers) - as well as some of the more recent names that currently twinkle in the firmament of kid...

Asheville River Arts District apartment complex faces delays

Image
CLOSE A quick history of how Asheville's "RAD" went from post-industrial grittiness to tourist haven. Joel Burgess/Citizen-Times The Stoneyard Apartments are proposed for 175 Lyman St. in the River Arts District . (Photo: Form & Function Architecture)   ASHEVILLE - Approval of a proposed $19 million River Arts District apartment complex has been delayed a second time after City Council concerns about high rent prices . The 133- unit Stoneyard Apartments were slated to be reviewed at Tuesday's council meeting, but Mayor Esther Manheimer asked that the public hearing be delayed to "a date uncertain." The council unanimously approved the change with no discussion. No one from the Saluda- based AltInvest development group spoke at the meeting. On Wednesday morning Sasha Vrtunksi , with the city's planning and urban design department , said the delay happened at the request of AltInvest. Chief developer David LaFave couldn 't be reached by text...

Sometimes more can be too much when it comes to sports coverage

Image
Foxtel's coverage of the AFL and NRL is first class, now we can watch international games live and in high definition. The thought of this, even 10-15 years ago, would have been unthinkable. And the commentary is, generally, of a high standard. That said, I really cannot see or understand the logic or rationale behind the recently adopted practice of interviewing players coming off the field during the half-time break. Surely it is unreasonable to expect players coming in at half-time to readily come up with any deep and meaningful analysis of his/her performance or that of the team when all the player wants to do is have a quiet drink and unwind. It would also be appropriate to remind players that officials are now "wired for sound" and of the need to moderate their language during the game and in after-match interviews. Some of the comments are colourful, to say the least. Andrew Rowe, Florey Centre design flawed A new National Convention Centre is wrongly proposed...
