New Haven’s Jared Flagg Launches One of the First Ponzi Schemes

Image
In 1926 the fraud police had Jared Flagg under questioning. It wasn't the first time the flimflam man was in trouble with the law. But it would be the last. As the investigators pushed for answers about a particular fraud, Flagg began struggling for breath. The attorneys suspected it was a trick to slow them down. But for once in his scandal-plagued life, Jared Flagg was playing it straight. He collapsed and died. Just short of 70 years old, Jared Flagg left his estate to his wealthy and better-known brother Edward, who was a highly regarded architect and landlord in New York City. The Flaggs were relatives of Cornelius Vanderbilt, and Vanderbilt money had paid for Edward's education and launched him as a successful architect. At the time he died, Edward was a major landowner on Staten Island and, his obituary noted, had the design of the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. among his notable credits. Jared's obituary, meanwhile, simply noted he "collapsed on...

The Safdie Brothers Are Classic New York Hustlers. Their Movies Might Make Them Legends.

The Safdie Brothers Are Classic New York Hustlers And their movies might make them legends. Before deciding he wanted to make a Safdie Brothers movie , the erstwhile heartthrob Robert Pattinson hadn ’t actually seen a Safdie Brothers movie . It was one still image — of the lead actress from their 2014 addiction drama Heaven Knows What — that led him to pick up the phone. “He said, ‘I wanna be on a movie set that had the energy that I imagine this had,’” Benny, 31, says. “Little did he know, there was no movie set,” Josh, 33, laughs. Adapted from the street life of its star, Arielle Holmes, Heaven Knows What is a breathless, booming piece of work — somehow both a plotless character study built on mumbly dialogue and stolen shots, and a punch to the face. “We were just this weird little crew making this movie in a very serious fashion.” For over a decade, that’s been the mission statement. The Safdies split a schizophrenic childhood on either side of the East River, with a dutifu...

Sunday Dare: Imagery and national cohesion in the age of Communication Technology

A Keynote Speech by Mr. Sunday Dare, Executive Commissioner Stakeholder Management , Nigerian Communications Commission at the Annual Lecture of Mass Communication Students Association , University of Lagos, July 19, 2017 Courtesies I am gratified by the honour of being chosen to give a keynote address at this year’s annual lecture of the Mass Communication Students Association , University of Lagos. The history and products of this department have consistently projected it as a leading centre for communication studies in Nigeria with an uncommon commitment to community service. That promise to community service is demonstrated, in truth and indeed, by our gathering here today to reflect on how we can reshape our ever lively, often heated national narratives and discourse. Given the contemporary realities of our country, majority of us here will agree the timing is auspicious for us to discuss how we can foster national cohesion using the force of logic, rather than the logic of for...
