How I’m Learning to Trust God’s Plan as a Man With Depression

Life with depression is filled with more rollercoasters than an amusement park . There are the days when life is great. You’re full of optimism. Hope runs supreme . You feel like you can take on the world. For me, that was a couple weeks ago . Life was awesome. I’d finally got a job in a city I adore like no other — Lincoln, Nebraska. As a born and raised Nebraskan, and as a diehard Cornhuskers sports fan , I was finally “coming home” after 17 years of living in Iowa. My hopes were sky high. A new job, a new career, a new life. It was an opportunity to be back close to my roots, close to family and dear friends, to have my support system closer to me than I’ve had in ages. My first night back in Lincoln, I snapped a picture — one I had missed taking roughly three months earlier. Memorial Stadium (home of the Nebraska football team ) was on the left, followed by the Nebraska state capital building , Pinnacle Bank Arena , then capped by the stately lit Haymarket Park baseball park ,...

The Grownups: John Altschul, the Elder Statesman of West Hollywood, Knows How to Reach Consensus

John Altschul with his dog, Ethanol. (Photo by James Mills) EDITOR’S NOTE: The is another in a series of occasional stories titled “The Grownups” about West Hollywood residents 75 years old or older who are active in civic life. He’s been called the elder statesman of West Hollywood . He possesses the leadership, diplomacy, patience, charm and institutional memory necessary to hold that honorary title. More importantly, he has the ear of city leaders, community activists , business leaders and developers that is required of an effective statesman. Although he was not involved with the formation of the city, he became a guiding force in shaping West Hollywood . And this week, John Altschul celebrates his 81st birthday. He reluctantly accepts the idea of being the city’s elder statesman, but would prefer he wasn’t quite so much on the elder side of it (wouldn’t we all!). “ West Hollywood has always been a place where everyone has been so friendly,” says Altschul. “I’ve always felt ...

Detroit entrepreneur brings 20 small business pop-ups to Briarwood Mall

A popular small business pop -up event that's attracted thousands of visitors in Detroit is making its way to Ann Arbor.   The All Things Detroit pop -up will take place Aug. 18-20 at Briarwood Mall, 100 Briarwood Circle in Ann Arbor. Jennyfer Crawford, a Detroit entrepreneur and owner of consulting firm Ask Jennyfer , is organizing the event. It will feature about 20 small businesses from around metro Detroit, showcasing everything from homemade ceramics to T-shirts. This will be Crawford's first such event outside the city of Detroit.   "Ann Arbor is a different bank of customers, and it'll help these small businesses build more brand awareness," Crawford says.   Crawford says she held her first All Things Detroit events about four years ago in her one-bedroom apartment, but they quickly grew too big for that venue. She moved into Detroit's Eastern Market, at first filling up one shed. After two years, she expanded to rent out the entire market with 250...

Formula Nero DH Fork - First Look

Image
Formula is a resurgent company right now. Maybe best known for their brakes, they launched their suspension line in 2012 with their 33 fork. Since then they have taken a cautious path for development, but have quietly and completely revamped their entire range of products. Only last year they added their burly single crown Selva fork and all-new Cura brake platform . As well as the headline launches they have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to refine and perfect their damping performance, as we found out with them last December, to the point where their suspension can hold its own against the best on the market. Yet they are a company that has always been closely tied to the downhill side of the sport, so the inevitable question was: when would they add a dual crown fork ? The Nero fork is their answer to that question. This year you may have spied the prototypes for this fork aboard the bikes of Argentina Bike , the top DH racing team in Italy. While Loris Revelli or Fran...

Screenwriting Wisdom from the Oscar-Nominated Taylor Sheridan

Image
The story of Taylor Sheridan — the Oscar-nominated screenwriter behind Sicario , Hell or High Water , and Wind River — is an inspiring one, especially for those screenwriters that are getting somewhat long in the tooth as they continue the struggle to break through.   Sheridan wrote his very first script when he was 40 years old. Sicario , written on spec, was then put into a drawer to write what he felt would be an easier script to sell. That script was the Oscar-nominated Hell or High Water .  Formerly known as Comancheria , this spec would be Sheridan’s first sale. It was also one of the 2012 Black List Scripts . The sale of Sicario soon followed and would then go on to be the first of the two to make it to the big screen. Both scripts — and their eventual film adaptations — would garner amazing critical and box office acclaim . His third script, Wind River , was then picked up with Sheridan attached as the director and has enjoyed much acclaim of its own. Not a bad start to a s...

How to Make it to $1 Million

Image
The balance of our coverage provides a snapshot of who America's millionaires are, where they live, and how they built their wealth. Nearly two decades ago, these five families were featured in MONEY as "millionaires in the making"—households that were well on their way to a seven- figure net worth excluding the value of their primary residences. Rhone in MONEY’s August 2000 issue, when he was still a “Millionaire In The Making.”   That was starting in 2000, around the time the dotcom stock bubble began to burst. Yet despite running into one of the worst bear markets in history—which was followed soon after by the global financial panic , the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression—these families still managed to achieve their goals. How did they accomplish this? Some did it by living frugally and saving aggressively so that when the bad times hit, they had enough of a cushion. Others proved to be resilient in the face of setbacks, staying the course with the...
